input shaft question.

I just got everything put together and now i am trying to get it running right, my main problem is that my car idles at like 3 to 4 grand. my 2nd problem which might become my main problem when i let out on my clutch pedal it makes the car die down, and if i were to continue to let it out it would stal my engine.(cars in air with wheels on.) This is my first project so things are going so smooth. this project has been going on for a few weeks ago. My tranny, when i had it out it i tried to turn the input shaft by hand and i couldnt get it to move, but i didnt know any better and didnt think anything about it. Is there a chance that i might have something stuck inside my tranny? I also have a question about the two plugs on the very end of the tranny i opened one up and it seems there isnt any fluid in it, but i couldnt get my finger inside there and check if it was below. by the way i did fill up the one on the inner most of the tranny, the one we always check at Jiffy Lube(where i used to work) but i have never noticed the ones on the end, what are they for? this is alot of writing but i am tring to get my damn mmotor running. THANKS.

If you couldn't turn the input shaft by hand, and it tries to stall the engine in neutral, you have a problem. Pull the tranny and disassemble it to see what's wrong.

ok, that said, what if it say thought for maybe a few months, in someones elses garage, maybe that contributes to it?

What on earth do you mean? The tranny thought for a few months? What was it thinking about?

sorry pressed y instead of t. met to say it sat for a while.

Re: input shaft question. (zdowell17)

Gotcha...I wouldn't see why that would make a difference if it sat for awhile. But if you couldn't turn the mainshaft by hand when it was out of the car, something's wrong. There is resistance somewhere, and you need to fix it. Otherwise, I would imagine it would start tearing up things inside the tranny.

mattssi Dec 2, 2004 08:10 AM

I had a tranny like that before, It was a b16 tranny that somebody busted the stock diff in, and then replaced with a gsr diff, just swapped the bearings. can you tell if the tranny has been tore apart at all? Either way, you may have to open it up. You should be able to spin the mainshaft with the tranny off the car with ease, if you cant, then there is some binding somewhere.

Re: (mattssi)

Just a thought, but when you tried to turn the input shaft by hand, what did it feel like? Any little bit of motion, like backlash in the gears? Or is it just stuck solid? I can think of 3 possibilities...

1 - Tranny shaft bearings have too much preload, or maybe assembled wrong, or ??? Basically there's too much friction in that shaft. Kinda hard to believe there would be ENOUGH friction to stall the engine...

2 - The shift forks have a system of balls, indents, & springs which do not allow more than one gear to be engaged at the same time. If that's not put together properly, you can have 2 gears engaged. The shaft will turn only a tiny amount, which is just the few thousandths clearance between the gear teeth (backlash).

3 - A synchro baulk ring is seized. Basically acts like that gear is engaged, even though the position of the shifter & synchro hub is not in the 'engaged' position. If you put the tranny in neutral it'll act like that one gear is engaged; if you put it in any other gear it'll act like both are engaged. Just like #2, you get a tiny bit of motion from the gear backlash.

Re: (JimBlake)

ok, how hard is it to take apart the tranny? what would i be looking for? is there anything i have to replace when opening the tranny? only reason i ask that, is those hidden cost that when you open shit there are gaskets and snap rings you have to replace. any help would be great, i have never opened up a tranny before and dont have any idea what todo after taking the tranny off the motor. by the way my Uncle owns TransTech. he is a transmission specialist so i could get help from there if there is anything that you think might take special tools.

Re: (zdowell17)

no gaskets to replace, sounds like you should bring the trans over to your uncle and have him walk you through it https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emsmilep.gif

Re: (zdowell17)

Yeah transmissions are one of the very confusing things to work on, especially your first time. If you have someone who is an expert (ie: uncle), take it to him and have him help you out.

mattssi Dec 3, 2004 07:18 AM

there not that difficult. Just get a copy of a exploded view of the tranny. The hardest part is detaching the snap ring on the mainshaft so that you can pull the outer casing off, other than that, just make sure you use hondabond or rtv sealant when putting that case back on.
Oh and i almost forgot, don't forget to remove the indent bolts and spring and little ball bearing.

Re: (mattssi) will everyone read this, it goes into everything i am having troubles with, sorry if

I have just got my LS motor into my 92 civic HB. I have a GSR tranny and it seems that maybe that my tranny might be seized or something inside. Ill tell you the problems i have and see what you have to say about it. First off, my car is in the air. I have it in neutral and when i spin the wheel by hand they both move. I tried jacking my winter beater up and putting it in neutral and spinning the wheels by hand and only one spins then. So my conclusing is maybe a gear might be stuck ingauged. When i start my car and slowly let the clutch out in neutral the wheels dont move and if i let the clutch all the way out it stalls the motor. My shifter only goes into a couple of gear is i play with the slave though, what i mean is that if i press it in so that the release fork pulls back on the pilet bearing i can get into like 1st a little bit, and maybe 4th. thats putting it in gear from under neith the car to! after that i try and start it again and when i start to let the clutch out it makes the shifter vibrat and shake. Im not sure what it is. so i was wondering if you could tell me or maybe ask some of your buddies and find out what it is. one more thing i dont know how hard its suppose to be but the wheels feel kind of stiff when rotating them, maybe because of it being stuck in gear? the guy i bout it off said he took it apart and everything looked ok(I found out after i got it and installed it before he told me that he had taken it apart) nice guy eh?

Re: (mattssi) will everyone read this, it goes into everything i am having troubles with, sorry if

Well, if it stalls the engine even when it's in neutral, that's not good. That sounds like the mainshaft is seized.

If it's still in the air, try this...
When you spin one front wheel, the other one spins the opposite direction? That's how the differential is supposed to work IF the tranny is IN GEAR. Get a friend, hold one wheel while turning the other. Or try to turn them the opposite direction. If you can't do it then the countershaft is seized too?

Kinda sounds like you gotta take it out & take it apart. Maybe some bearings are seized, maybe synchros are seized, either way you have to take it apart & see.

thanks, do you think it could be the shift fork inside? maybe the guy who took it apart didnt put it in right? and on top of the tranny i am missing this bolt that goes all the way through into the tranny? its right next to the tranny mount. I didnt notice this till now!

But... you might STILL have to open the tranny to fix it. Maybe not good enough to simply put that back in as it sits in the car.

Did you check the stuff I said? I don't see how that explains EVERYTHING, like both mainshaft & countershaft locking up when the shifter is in neutral. (If they're actually both locked.)

The Helm repair book has lots of good stuff, you'll want to get your hands on that. (Plus your uncle's help...)

Good call Mark (si_hatch) his step papa is making him pull it out of the garage and throw a fucking tarp over it to put his charger in the garage, from my point of veiw, and probably a majority of the people on here, i think the civic is a priority...and shouldnt go neglected for the winter...Good job

Re: input shaft question. (modded_SIhatchy)

Thanks, Yes my step dad is making me call it done for the winter. I am so damn close, I got the motor idling good, i can actually here something other than my motor idling at 4 grand. With your guys help i could have had it done https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emsad.gif but anyways, i will post pics, get ahold of a helms for my motor. Then in the spring(13 Weeks https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif ) I will be able to start this shit all over. Reason i could push it out till tonite is that i had to take a axle out so i can eventually put it back in. Makes sence right? All this time spent and i have a car that starts up. Sweet....... I guess.
