honda accord external ignition coil in civic?
i noticed at the junk yard that this accord had an external ignition coil setup OEM.
and now curious if it will work on another honda such as civic integra or del sol.
the cap comes with a plug for external coil like MSD distributor cap
would there be any benefit ? and if not can this be an option when replacing a bad coil in a civic etc?
and why would they use external coil on that specific model as well.
also PLEASE, if you respond, dont post stupid comments without explanation, if you claim something then provide facts, not "my buddy said".
heres the images.

An ignition coil is a very basic piece of equipment, you could use just about any coil on any car.
I would suspect that Honda removed it in an attempt to remove heat from that area, and increase airflow marginally. Other than perhaps increasing the cooling of the coil, there is no apparent advantage that I can see from a technical standpoint.

You use a prelude and I'm guessing an accord cap on a civic, no need to buy msd cap
a guy at napa told me that

Re: honda accord external ignition coil in civic?
i keep thinking about this external coil setup every time i see them at pick and pull
i dont know much about the technical works of ignition system so correct me if im wrong
coil is bigger so will allow for better spark
but since its bigger it takes more time to recharge.
and it is easier to replace when troubleshooting
also stays cooler since its not inside the distributor.
but since its outside its one extra connection that civic doesnt have
anyone can haz some more technical info i would like to know
or maybe a keyword to search for. searching for ignition coil upgrade or ignition coil didnt bring much besides online stores

Re: honda accord external ignition coil in civic?
Any increase in secondary voltage would need to be wired based on the turns ratio of the primary/secondary coils.
Coils with larger primary inductance will take slightly longer to recharge, this increase is negligable for most applications. The only reason you would need a nigher voltage spark (IE secondary winding) is if the pressures withing the cylinder are so high it will not spark without a higher turns-ratio secondary winding.
