I know theres a school in Houston that specializes in Engine building and high performance buildups...
Its name is S.A.M(School of Automotive machinists). You bring your own engine and during the course of your studies, you get to completely rebuild it using the schools own equipment and learning at the same time...

Wish I heard of it before I enrolled in UTI...

Thats what Id do then,Go to SAM.. And start buying some tools, that stuff gets real expensive real fast!

Experience counts for alot and practice makes perfect so start now and when you finish SAM, youll have a few engines under your belt and hopefully a nice one under the hood too....

If I knew about SAM before I started UTI, Id be an engine builder instead of a damn Porsche technician...Go to SAM! https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

Re: engine building school (LSVTEC_DC4)

Nothings wrong with UTI,its just that I would have rather gone into an engine building school instead of an automotive technology school...
I learned ALOT at UTI and would not be where Im at now if I hadnt of gone...I just wonder sometimes that If I was a machinist instead, how my life would be different...
The Porsche thing is great,I get to drive/play/work on extremely expensive cars everyday and wouldnt be here if I didnt go to UTI.(Porsche school only accepts UTI grads.)
If you just want to go to school for Hondas/Acuras, there is a program that another friend went to at San Jacinto community college in Houston ,TX...
I forget what its called but they only learn Hondas I believe...Once You get to a dealership, theyll send you to factory training occasionally...Now that is fun! They put me in a hotel room for a week in Dallas and I go to school in the morning and get off in the afternoon w/ pay and a food allowance!!!

Just go to SAM it's the best out there, the owner Judson will teach you everything you want to know.Me and dave Localio from Head Games both went there and recommend it to all. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

Re: engine building school (cstay)

I will have to agree with go and get some experiance to go with the education. I co-own a shop in Ottawa and both myself and my partner went to the GM ASEP program here. After we finished we got into modding Mike (my partner)'s Civic. From there we just kept playing around with our own stuff and now we have our shop where we do engine rebuilds and build ups. We have heavily modded cars from Honda/Acura to WRXs to a built and turbo'd cavalier Z24. The best thing I could tell you is once you get the education and start to play you realize that for the most part a motor is a motor and the stuff that is different you can do some research and find out how to play with it. Oh and when you start (if you start) doing research and development... like we have try the stuff on your own car first. The way I look at it is it's ok if I blow my stuff up.... it would be a learning experience. But if I blow up one of my customers cars then... well it just sucks and I have to correct that problem. Good luck in comming into the trade. I wish you the best and success.

Re: engine building school (LSVTEC_DC4)

I think you guy's are missing the big picture, all engine building experience is applicable to all other engines. They are air pumps that are designed in different ways but do the same thing.Engines all follow the basic principles, what works for one generally works for all, specifics will be different but themes will stay the same.If your looking for a school that will teach you all the current advances in just Hondas, your outa luck.Goto SAM you will not regret it if engine building is what your shooting for.

Re: engine building school (Ed's Racing Heads)

SAM looks cool but the price is up there...definitely not a decision to be taken lightly.

I would love to do something like this myself. Engine building and tuning are the two things that I could get into. A lot of other auto related stuff I dont know.

You get what you pay for.How many other schools can et you on a Pro Stock or Cup team right out of school? It was the best money I ever spent,it jump started my carear by at least 10 yrs.

I am not saying anything negative...but I do think the cost would be prohibitive to many potential students.

I know it sure would be to me. $10-14,000 per course x 10 courses (if you took them all) = wow.

I would LOVE to get into this but I already have 40k+ in student loans from my B.S. (which I would trade for engine building school in a heartbeat).

*edit: I am taking my numbers from here: http://www.samracing.com/docs/...e.htm

Then if you look under course descriptions they list 10 classes total...

Fkned Nov 4, 2004 03:15 PM

Re: engine building school (bomber)

There are 3 classes not 9 and you don't have to take thewm all just the block and head classes,so thats $28k,sounds fair to me.You would have to work at a race shop for many yrs(at 7-10$ an hour) to learn what Juds telling you.

Re: engine building school (Ed's Racing Heads)

Their website is a bit confusing.

SCHEDULE OF COURSES SCHEDULE OF TUITION - Course I & II
Automotive Engine/Block Machining Course I
Automotive Engine/Cylinder Head Machining Course II
Automotive Engine/CNC Machining Course III
Registration Fee 100.00
Tuition (per course) 13,700.00
Textbook & Manuals 75.00
(Supplies and lab fees included in tuition.)

SCHEDULE OF TUITION - Course III
Registration Fee Included in Tuition
Tuition (per course) 10,900.00
Textbook & Manuals Included in Tuition
(Supplies and lab fees included in tuition.)

These are the classes you are talking about right? The other classes they list are elective courses or something? Do you know the cost on those (like the dyno testing class, etc etc).

Look at it this way when you have a semester at college your not just taking 1 class are you, thoose are the class breakdowns for the courses. There are 3 courses:Block,Head, and CNC machining. You can take just the block class,or take block and head classesw/o taking the cnc class.

Re: engine building school (Ed's Racing Heads)

I see...each "course" is actually a cluster of classes.

That is why it is confusing...this reads nothing like your normal university catalog would https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

Thanks for the info.

Re: engine building school (bomber)

so how much would it be for all three classes?

Fkned Nov 4, 2004 04:08 PM

Re: engine building school (cstay)

All 3 would be about 39-40k.Not cheap but well worth it for the experience you will receive. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif
