The real question is have you desoldered and soldered circuit boards before. It's easy to make yourself a nightmare with a marginal soldering job. There are plenty of good people willing to chip it for short money. If your just doing one or two for yourself its cheaper to have someone else do it.

you will need a 29c256 eprom chip. Also a eprom chip is a erasable read only memory chip. wich means it will retain knowlage when there is no power to it. But can be erased by exposeure to ultra violet light.

You don't need a 29c256, the atmels are so hard to find these days, and also more expensive, I use 27c512 because they're less than a buck so I got 5 of them plus some other crap shipped for the cost of a 27c256 before shipping. I just use the 27c512 when I chip stuff, cuz it only takes a while to erase with a proper eraser. The xenocron kit is legit, I'd get it from moates.net though since it's cheaper.

the 29c256 is electronicly erasable...the 27c256 is the one with a quartz window on top for uv erase...i get bags of the 27c256's for dirt cheap...the 29c256's go for about 6 bucks a pop

Yep, gotta love the cheap method. I always just have a bunch so I can write them and leave the others erasing and I'll never need to wait.
