Car Safe to Break In??
Instead of breaking my motor in on the dyno im gonna put 700 or so mi. on it then tune it. The setup is a b18c bored to 85mm with JE 12:1 pistons, i have cam gears and a FPR along with a EGT gauge to keep a close eye on the A/F. Im wonding if it would be possible to perform a safe break-in along with being descently tuned? thanks

Meh, the egt can only do so much in keeping track of AF ratios. It's possible, just back off the timing and be a little generous with the fuel, but why are you breaking it in on the street and not on the dyno? If you're going there anyway, it's the pefect time to do it.

idk, guess bc ive had so many problems. im weary of the high rpms that it would have to run at on the dyno.

It's either going to break or it's not. Waiting isn't going to make it any stronger at high rpms. To get the rings to seal, you need to generate cylinder pressure, and the best way to do that in a controlled manner is a dyno. And the same procedure you use to break it in is the way you tune it:
50% throttle through 50% rpm range 60% through 60% rpms 70% through 70% continue until you are at 100% throttle to redline. All this time you are watching AF and EGT and tuning as needed. This procedure also puts a load on the rings and breaks them in, ensuring a good seal and reducing blowby. |
