Bearing Clearance Question
 

Hi to everyone!

My name is Scott and I'm new to this site (as everybody can tell by the number of my posts https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif)

I'm putting a B18b together and I would like to know how I should set the bearing clearances. I know what the clearances should be, and I know that my crank is in great condition (already balanced and polished). The rods are brand new eagle and the block is already line-honed. All I need to know is how to go about buying the right bearing, cause I know that Honda OEM bearings come in around 10 different sizes.

What most people do is run ACL bearings, which are a generalized set in terms of thickness. They are right in the middle of Honda's bearing thickness chart. As long as that crank belongs to that block, the clearances should be good, depending on how much the crank was polished.

well, im assuming you have a service manual.
so besides the letter/number matching that you prolly already have done; you can do it the right way and mic the bore/ crank crank/rods to find the exact tolerances.

bearing thickness goes as follows:
Blue 2.013-2.010 mm 0.0793”- 0.0791”
Black 2.010-2.007 mm 0.0791”- 0.0790”
Brown 2.007-2.004 mm 0.0790”- 0.0789”
Green 2.004-2.001 mm 0.0789”- 0.0788”
Yellow 2.001-1.998 mm 0.0788”- 0.0787”
Pink 1.998-1.995 mm 0.0787”- 0.0785”
Red 1.995-1.992 mm 0.0785”- 0.0783”

Rod bearing thickness by color
Blue 1.510-1.507 mm 0.0594”- 0.0593”
Black 1.507-1.504 mm 0.0593”- 0.0592”
Brown 1.504-1.501 mm 0.0592”- 0.0591”
Green 1.501-1.498 mm 0.0591”- 0.0590”
Yellow 1.498-1.495 mm 0.0590”- 0.0589”
Pink 1.495-1.492 mm 0.0589”- 0.0587”
Red 1.492-1.489 mm 0.0587”- 0.0586”

genuine honda bearings (taiho and daido) are among the best bearings in the world. they are very soft and a bearing failure often times means minimal crankshaft damage. shoot for 1 and a half thousandths (.0001") clearance on all bearings and avoid lightweight crank pulleys.. your bottom ends will last forever. i determine with a bore guage and transfer to a standard mic, select bearing using a pin mic and then assemble with plastigage, disassemble, trial fit however many sets it takes to get .0015"

the measuring instruments need to be .0001" increment for this. if you dont have them, the plastigage is accurate, just more trial and error.

Thanks for the replies, but they don't really answer my question. I know the clearances I want.

I want to know how I should get the correct bearing. The only precision tool I have is a micrometer. I want to go with OEM bearings. How do I read the codes off the crank shaft https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emdgust.gif ??

I'm new to all of this, so please bear with me.

you need a service manual.

yeah, either go by the sizing chart in the manual in conjunction with the stamps on the oilpan rail and crank, or, you gotta have the measuring equipment and use the thickness chart posted above.
