Bad TPS sensor?
 

My B16 1st gen has rough idle, i've tried everything, I unplug the TPS sensor today the rough idle went away but the idle keeping at 2.5K rpm, is that the bad sensor or normal when it unplug???

Try reving your engine and hold at 2.5k with the TPS plugged in.
If the rough idle goes away with it plugged in, its not the lack of TPS fixing the idle, just the high rpm.

How are your engine/tranny mounts?

try resetting the ecu. Believe it or not that actually does work sometimes.

You can only buy a TA (throttle angle..aka TPSensor) sensor with a throttle body from the dealer for around $400. However, you can buy used throttlebodies from such cars as Civic DX's or Accord DX's which go very cheaply used. Then you can swap over the throttle angle sensor from one to the other.

I was lucky and had a friend who had an Accord throttlebody laying around from a DX. I swapped that onto my B16A throttlebody and haven't had a problem since.

At any rate, what were we talking about? OH! right TPS sensors. Have you tried the AICV (air idle control valve) on the back of the manifold? This can and does cause exactly what your talking about. All the TPS sensor does is send the position of the throttle to the computer. But the AICV regulates the idle speed, and if it's not working properly, then you'll have a crappy idle.

Try unplugging it and see if the problem persists. If it does, then the problem is elsewhere.

I did swap the AICV (air idle control valve) with my friend's , problem still there.
Also how can I check vacum leak, use gauge or feel by hand http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emsmile.gif .

The easiest way to remove the TPS sensor is to use a dremel cut-off wheel and put a flathead slot in the top of the mounting "rivets". These are not actually rivets even though that is what they look like. The body of them is actually threaded, so if you put a slot in it, you can use a flathead screwdriver to unscrew it out.

I had asked someone about this myself before I swapped mine over, and they said this is the way RC Engineering does it. It worked like a charm.

As for your TPS sensor, just be very careful. The thing is very fragile and easily breaks. It's not a big deal if you do break it, but you'll have to go searching around for another used throttlebody with the TPS intact which is just a pain in the ass. Just be very gentle with it. Also, I used Honda-bond as a gasket. I think the only purpose of the factory paper gasket there, is to keep water and dirt out of the TPS's internal mechanisms. You can't order this gasket from Honda so just improvise using Honda-bond or some paper gasket material.

You'll have to reset your TPS to factory specs when you're done. Check the Helm's manual for what voltage you should be running at, at idle and WOT.

Do you happen to know if all Honda TPS's are interchangeable? I'm troubleshooting a hesitation on my H22, and am looking for a TPS to swap on. But there's not exactly an abundance of junkyard H22's to be found in rural New Hampshire/Vermont. But if an Accord or Civic one will work, it widens my options quite a bit.

It pisses me off that you can't buy TPS's separately from the throttle body. Dealer "suggested" I just replace the entire throttle body ($640, no labor). I think not.

Of course, I'm still not positive my TPS is the cause of the problem. I tried a sensor tester dealio, but couldn't for the life of me get the 3 alligator clips to fit in there simultaneously. And it's hardly conveniently located - 3 inches from the firewall, and pointed downward.

It might have been possible if I removed the TB, but I ran out of daylight & ambition.
