B16 jumps between 1500 and 2000 rpm @~5-10% throttle
B16a2 stock 178k miles
I came out of my house, and I left my car on. I'm in front of the car and I hear it go into a high idle (tach shows 1000ish rpm), I move the car and it is very rough taking off, if i hold in the clutch or leave it in neutral, and give it about 5% throttle, it will hit 2000, and it will take 1 second or so and hit 1500, then jump back to 2000 and it just repeats. If i give it just a touch more gas, it jumps faster, about .75 - .5 seconds. Almost sounds like a two step. Then I give it a little more, and it jumps as if it is half throttle. I can turn the car off, and back on and it stops. It did this last year when it got cold outside and quit after it warmed up (outside). It just got cold again and now i can diagnose it properly. Please leave your suggestions. I'm not super smart with cars but I know enough to get by. It also has a check engine light as the cat. But it doesn't make sense that the cat would be clogged, because it would do that regardless... Right? I usually have to warm up the engine in cold weather for this to start.

Try disconnecting the IACV and see if the idle stabilizes. It may drop to a very low RPM but should remain idling at ~650RPM. Try that and get back to us.

I will try that next time it screws up. Its pretty much hit or miss, been driving it a bit lately, and it hasn't done it. About where is this plug at?

its prob that your fast idle thermo valve screw has backed out over time

It is definatelly the IACV, it is an intermittent problem. It only occus on a cold day. I also found out that it has only done that after the vehicle has hit a hard bumb (lowered car + bump = enough force to make a bad connection mess up a little. I unplugged the IACV, and it dropped in rpm a lot, (didnt check for exact number), revved it up, and it does the thing again. Plug it in, it still does the thing. Turn it off and then back on. It works good. I'm uploading a video to youtube to show what it does. I will be wiggiling wires around to find out which one has the bad connection. Hoping I find it.
