99 Accord does not shut off when ignition is turned off
Hello all,
In the past few months I've had this reoccurring problem, and it seems to be getting worse. Sometimes when I shut the ignition off, the cars stays running. I can pull the key out and it stays running. The only way to get it to shut off is to hit the brake pedal.
It has happed. 8 or 9 times in the last 2 months. However, the last week or so, when I hit the brake pedal, the engine and car will shut off, but as soon as I release the brake pedal, the car will come back on(not the engine) as if the key is turned to accessory mode. It doesn't happen every time but it is happening increasingly often.
I have also ended up with a dead battery in the morning twice in the last week. It is a brand new battery, 3 weeks old, and I had it tested yesterday. It is good.
2 days ago I was sitting in my car on my lunch break, car off, engine off, with the key in the ignition. I accidently bumped the bottom of the ignition switch with my knee, and all the accessories turned on ( the key did not move at all).
So here is where I am at. Through googling I've noticed these cars tend to have a lot of ignition switch problems. I'm assuming I need the switch, but should I also purchase the lock cylinder assembly? Its about $70 more for the switch and lock assembly as opposed to just the switch. Money is tight so if I don't need to replace it, I don't want to.
Has anyone else had this type of problem? Thanks in advance for the responses.

If money is tight, I would just use an inline toggle switch for $4, and save to do it right.

Get a new lock cylinder from any parts store. Swap it in. See if it fixes it, if not, get an ignition switch from Honda.
And it's not easy to replace the entire assembly if you buy it with the tumbler. Unless you can't get the lock cylinder out, you don't the entire assembly.

You can replace the ignition switch separately. That's what I did when I replaced the ignition switch on our 1998 RA5 Odyssey Prestige V6, as it was giving us issues with the engine cutting off while driving.
You can separate the ignition switch from the barrel, they are held together with two flathead (I think) screws.
