1st gear keeps on shooting back out
When I throw it in first and accelerate slowly, sometimes it just pops back out really hard.......could it be a synchro or something else in the tranny?

Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (3rdGteg)
Yep, bent shift fork. I had a Saab with a bent shift fork, and that sucker would pop out of gear at the most inopportune times, causing much overrevving and embarassment!

Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (3rdGteg)
check motor mounts first.........

Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (3rdGteg)
I'm having a similar problem in my car(99civic). Except mine pops out of 2nd. Is your shift lever moving around a lot (in gear, accellerating) ? Any noise from the tranny? The only thing they found wrong on the outside of mine was a worn out bushing on some sort of a stabilizer bar that connects the back of the tranny to the chassis http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...y5=SHIFT+LEVER. And that when this thing wasn't doing it's job the tranny was moving around (hence movement in the shift lever) it was getting forced out of gear thusly wearing out various items in the tranny.
Not sure if this is similar to your problem but it might be. Check it out though. That little $8 costed a lot when I ignored it. |
Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (3rdGteg)
this just happens to my friends delsol.

Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (3rdGteg)
also check the little boot thingy on the shifter, if its not on straight it will also cause it to not go into gear fully, then pop out at times.

Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (TYPE EG6)
the fork is probally bent! do u drive resting your hand on the shifter? I never heard of it before? |
Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (Ideal R)
Will resting my hand on the shifter really bend the fork? I never heard of it before? |
Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (Mista Bone)
check motor mounts first......... [Modified by chirp3rd, 4:46 AM 8/5/2002] |
Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (Mista Bone)
Will resting my hand on the shifter really bend the fork? I never heard of it before? Won't bend it, but will wear it out about twice as fast. If you are not changing gears, keep you hand off your "stick!" |
Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (Ideal R)
Yea i would check the motor mounts first.... It takes about 7 degrees of motor rock to pull the car out of gear but that's mainly for gears 1,3, and 5. If not that then it's most likely the fork. Take off the tranny and replace. Have fun

Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (Ideal R)
well, The 88-95 SOHC trannys use alum, forks, everything else that I've seen use steel.
I wasted a brand new $50 1-2 shifter fork in 15 miles. Bearing had backed out of the case, something even Honda mechanics siad was impossible! Lifetime of the parts depends on the driver. If I autox all year + 100-150 drag passes, I replace my 1-2 shifter fork yearly. Part of race maintaince. |
Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (Mista Bone)
This might sound stupid cuz I don't know much about the tranny, but where is the shift fork actually located? Is it inside the tranny casing or external? And how do I check to see if it's messed up? Thanks.

Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (3rdGteg)
internally.........
you drop tranny, spliy it wide open, remove the gear cluster, then check clearances listed in Helms. |
Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (Mista Bone)
I heard it's pretty complicated to replace synchros, etc. How difficult would this shift fork be.....I can swap trannies, but never opened one up and messed with it internally. I know I'm gonna need a 3rd gear synchro + maybe that 1-2 shift fork: how much usually and how difficult?

Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (3rdGteg)
just as hard as synchros.
It easy, if you pay attention to detail. |
Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (Mista Bone)
Any special tools (for measuring or installing) the synchros and shift fork??
I'm gonna have to try and do it myself--like to learn new stuff. http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emwink.gif |
Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (3rdGteg)
nothing real special, Craftsman # 45492 and a 8mm hex drive. Tolulene based carb cleaner and some HondaBond4.
Oh yeah, A Helms REALLY helps too! |
Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (Mista Bone)
Thanks for the replies Mista Bone. I have a Helms and HondaBond and can buy a 8mm hex drive+carb cleaner, but what exactly is that Craftsman # 45492?

Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (3rdGteg)
part number for the snap ring tool the get cases apart.

Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (Mista Bone)
What about some kind of "puller" I've read about in some other archived posts. It was a bearing puller or some kind of puller; do I need that? If so, what is it exactly called/where can I get one?
Thanks. |
Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (3rdGteg)
I've never needed a puller. I just use a workmate and a old/soft 2 lb mini-sledge that was made in 1946.

Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (Mista Bone)
ok thanks Mista Bone. You seem to know alot about trannies, just hope you'll be around answering some more of my questions when I open her up and look at those foreign gears, synchros, etc. http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emwink.gif http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/embeer.gif http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/embeer.gif http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/embeer.gif

Re: 1st gear keeps on shooting back out (3rdGteg)
