Default unstable and wandering on highway and under hard braking

are worn rear trailing arm bushings a likely cause of the problem?

there is ZERO play in the rear suspension. i can grab the wheel, and try to move it side-side, and it feels solid. however, there is obvious cracking and appears to be complete breakage of the large bushing in the trailing arms on both sides. this *just* started happening on the drive home today.

I think you answered your own question. Lots of hairline cracks that don't go far are common but if you see real major signs of breakage then they must be replaced immediately. I can imagine it would make the car very unsettled.
