how can I shorten the part of the axle where the axle nut tightens onto?
Basically, I'm using the 5th gen prelude's knuckle on my 4th gen prelude, it includes the 5lug hub which was the whole point of using it in the first place.
Well the 4th gen's axle is too long for teh 5th gen's knuckle. so what a lot of people do is use a few washers under the axle nut to hold the hub and everything flush on the axle. Thats all well and great and it does the job, but the problem is the axle nut sticks too far out into the wheel that I can't put the center cap on the wheel. i need about a half an extra inch.
can I some how cut a quarter of an inch off of the stud that the axle nut tightens on to without harming the threads on the remaining part of the axle stud?
if so, what tools could i use? how would i do this ? what would be the best way?
thanks in advance for the advice.

I'm assuming the axle is like a Civic's. The outter joint cannot be disassembled.
If you could somehow take it apart, you could chuck it in a lathe and cut it down. That would be best. The only other way I can think of is putting a nut on the threaded part, cutting it, filing it down, and taking the nut back off to reallign the threads.

thats what i was thinking of doing but I wasn't sure that that would definitly realign the threads?
i haveta be careful not to screw the threads up if I were to file it down.
another thought---
could I put washers on the studs up against the HUB? (before the Wheel?)
That should push the wheel out past the axle just enough for me to get the H Cap.
Is that safe?
couple of pics of the issue:
hell even if i could find a thicker cap that would work---

the thing is i dont think it will be enough.
plus, i wouldn't mind pushing the wheels out about a quarter inch. they look kinda lost in the wide wheel wells of a 4th gen lude.
someone talk to me about the safey of wheel spacers, and where to get them, and what to look for to make sure i'm getting quality one

Those spacers you posted are way to thick for stock studs. I hear the thickest you should go with spacers like that is 5mm. If I was you I would say screw cutting up the axle to make it shorter and get some spacers or if you want the really cheap alternative...2 washers on each stud. Just dont go too thick without going with longer studs.

6mm is about what I'll actually need.
hopefully longer studs wont be needed with that. (if i can find em)
is there anythign i should be concerned with regarding the safety of using these things?
is there any issues that I should know of?
how about these?

I think you should get extended studs to be on the safe side if thats how long you need spacers. If you dont want to do that take them to a machine shop and get them shortened but make sure you will be able to thread the nut on...

I think I've decided to go with the wheel spacer/extended lug studs.
I wanna go with hub centric ones to ensure theres no wheel vibration or what not.
I go on a lot of long trips and a vibrating wheel at high 80mph for 4 hours is friggin annoying
That being said, I'm gonna go with H&R which seems to be the most recommended brand for hub centric spacers.
I dont think 5mm is gonan be enough, so I'm gonna go for the 10mm. set. which will require longer wheel studs.
I'm not sure that the Kits come with the longer wheel studs, so if they dont, can anyone recommend me a good brand for longer wheel studs?
Or a good website that will sell me both the H&Rs and quality extended studs?
I'm NOT looking forward to installing 5 extended lug studs. that **** will not be fun.

H&Rs are the best ones I can think of off the top of my head. I would do some research on their website as I have seen some of their spacers that have the extended studs built into them and then studs that go on in the reverse direction and are secured with a nut if I remember correctly.
Blox I think sells extended studs as well as Skunk2 and ARP.
Edit: Dont forget the open ended lug nuts to go with the studs as well

I just checked out JHPUSA.com and they are running a sale on their Blox black open ended lug nuts for around 60 bucks and they also offer extended studs from all three of the companies I listed earlier. They have a section for wheel spacers but I dont see any listed. Hope that helps.
