highway swerves

when i drive on the highway or pretty much any road capable of 50mph my car sometimes goes right to left real quick. this happens a whole lot in the snow. it used to do this before i got the tie rods (in's and out's) replaced. and it kept doing it. so i tried the steering lock screw at the bottom of the steering rack(manual) and tightened it a little bit. it took the slack out of my steering wheel but its still doing this s*** on the roads and it scares the crap out of me. ive almost spun out because of this a few times

anybody know what anything about this problem

Sounds like it's following ruts in the road. Certain toe angles can cause this issue, as can various other alignment angles. Have you had the car aligned lately?

tires could also play a roll. what rubbers are you on and what PSi are they set at?

tires are 205/40/16 toyo proxe 4's. set at 32-35psi it does pull when it gets caught in grooves to the road sometimes and then it jerks back to the left or right really quick when straightening out steering wheel. sometimes in the snow at about 40 it does this and causes my back end to slide out bc it jerks so quick. ive had to fish tail it a couple times going 35+. not fun.

car was aligned 2 months ago when i had brand new moog tie rods(inner and outer). however crappy road conditions may have caused alignment to go out?

for some reason i feel like this is a steering rack problem. i could be completely wrong though..

camber settings could make this an issue as well, what are yours?

and has it always done this? even after the alignment? have you been driving on the same street?

Re: highway swerves

camber up front is -1.5-2.0* i believe

it has done this for a while. thats why i changed my tie rods, i thought they were the problem, but after the alignment it still did it. car drives straight when you let go of the wheel. but sometimes the wheels like to go their own way..(dry surfaces) then the other way(snow or ice covered) they like to slide to one side then catch. and it jerks the car

i believe if you have too much toe out it can cause this.. so ive heard

Tires (size, sidewall i.e. low profile, grip) definitely play a role in this. Try putting the stock wheels back on for a while.

Re: highway swerves

your upper and lower control arm bushings are probaly shot and your running 40 series tires there gona grab any groove in the road and follow it try putting two stock tires up front i bet it will drive straight without grabing left or right....
