Hard Brake Pedal

Hard Brake Pedal
On 19th July I bought a new HRV - a couple of times in September the engine cut out at very low speeds and I had trouble restarting it. On 5th September i visited a main dealer who tested my battery and said I probably wasn’t pushing the clutch pedal down further enough. On my way back from this visit and after about 15 minutes I was driving downhill and the brake pedal was so hard I couldn’t apply it - I ended up going through a red light and crashing into another car - both will be write offs. What could have caused this accident and how can I prove this ?

Re: Hard Brake Pedal
...this can't be real...
if it is real...then, the brakes get harder to push if the car is off and you push the pedal a few times because you deplete the vacuum assist.

Re: Hard Brake Pedal
Unfortunately this is very real - I told my insurers the brakes failed and their engineer only looked for leaking brake fluid which I never anticipated as I couldn’t move the brake pedal. After speaking with them yesterday am now hoping that they will now look for other causes ! 2 broken ribs and a fractured sternum was not what I wanted at the beginning of my holiday believe me !!

Re: Hard Brake Pedal
Two causes could be either a bent brake line or a foreign material stuck in the brake line. Could also be a seized piston or something like a rock could have gotten stuck in an area causing the brake pistons or pad to get stuck in position. Sorry to hear about your accident and glad you made it out! That is absolutely terrible to hear about! God speed with your insurance claim!

Re: Hard Brake Pedal
Actually sounds like your brake booster stopped working and you lost assist. If you aren't used to driving a heavy car without power brakes it can feel like it's nearly impossible to stop the car. It's a pretty jarring experience if it happens to you suddenly so I can understand completely if you weren't able to stop in time.
