Coilover System HELP!!

I need help deciding what type of coilover system to put on my car. I want to build the car from the ground up and coilovers and front and rear break conversions off a GSR is the first thing I'm going to do to my '94 EG6 HB. I’ve been looking at Skunk 2's Pro-S coilovers. I can get my hands on them for $649 but before I buy them I want to make sure they will fit my needs. I want the car to ride smooth as well as having a smooth ride on the track (AutoX) and not to mention, fit within my budget (approx. $600-800). Please help me make a decision and or give me some suggestions on other coilover systems

I'd recommend you save up a bit and go with Koni/GC combo. I don't think anyone has been disappointed with those.

Don't waste your money on Skunk2 coilovers. If I were you, get Progress CS-II. I had them on my '00 Civic coupe and love 'em. Imo, they're the best coilovers for the money......PERIOD.

Skunk2 is garbage, don't buy them.

Re: Coilover System HELP!!

^^^ indeed. I would rather keep my car stock if the only product left was Skunk2.

Re: Coilover System HELP!!

I have skunk2 coilovers, everyone is buthurt and on the bandwagon with skunk2. Relax, I have everything Skunk2 makes for suspension on my car never had a problem and paid a good price for the entire set up. Unfotunately your demands are going to be hard to meet because no aftermarket coilover set provides "smooth" driving condtions. If they did they wouldnt be sport coiliovers. Im not going to force skunk2 down anyones throat but my expierience with skunk2 v2 has been great. Another coilover similar to mine is the F&F type one, they are height adjustable and you dont have to mess with the spirng rate. my .02$

I have Koni/ground control combo. It's great.

Re: Coilover System HELP!!

I've rode in cars with Skunk2 full coilovers and coilover sleeves. Not impressed at all. It's just a name...nothing else.

Don't get me started about Function&Form either. They are worthless Chinese made crap...like Yonaka and all other copycat brands.

Re: Coilover System HELP!!

75% of the people who install coilovers think that is supposed to be the best thing ever and they are going to get som much performance. little do they know, that just like everything else your suspension needs to be tuned. I have had my car corner balanced and there is an unmistakeable difference. So the "my friend has this car and this set up, or i have riden in this car with this set up, doesnt apply here. Every product has a name, no? So that also doesnt apply here. And to stay on topic what other brands would you reccomend for his budget of 600-800$????? that ride to his standards?

LOL was there something you wanted to say SJ? or did I sum it up......lol

Re: Coilover System HELP!!

To each is their own. When I was looking for a decent coilover setup, Progress was the best for the money....especially for under $1000. I had their springs in my old Prelude and they rode perfect. BTW...CS-II are $600 and I PERSONALLY HAD THEM on my own car.

skunk2 pro s II coils are the best bang for your buck coil on the market.

Re: Coilover System HELP!!

Thanks for the help guys! I’m defiantly going with the GC/Koni combo or the Progress CS-II coilover systems. I have only read one good review and countless bad reviews on skunk 2 coilovers and that’s just not good enough for me. Thanks again everyone. I really appreciate it!!

Re: Coilover System HELP!!

Progress if you're not going to slam it. I run these. Head and shoulders over anything else I've had in my car thus far. Koni/GC if you are going to put it in the weeds..

NVturbo Feb 10, 2012 04:22 PM

Re: Coilover System HELP!!

Glad to help. GC/Koni yellows are nice but can be pricey but its up to you. Like I said, stay away from Skunk2. All hype...all price. Ha!!

Re: Coilover System HELP!!

Im not going to slam it. I really dont like that look. Its a daily driver and will also be spending a lot of time on the track as well :)

I have another question. What do you guys recommend for LCA's brands?

grumblemarc Feb 10, 2012 04:48 PM

Re: Coilover System HELP!!

Function 7 hands down. I'm running Skunk2 but not long enough to give an honest critique, mainly about how the bushings hold up.

Re: Coilover System HELP!!

Yea, Progress or GC/Koni, can't really go wrong. They both fall under the "do it right the first time" categories. Hope you'll be satisfied, as others have been.

That is BS. Just beucase you have coilovers, it doesn't mean you loose all ride comfort. With SOME you do, simply due to the spring rates.

I don't reccomend it, but if you get GC's off the shelf spring rates (OTS) the car can ride perfectly. That is based off of several reviews that I rear about them.
I don't reccomend them becuase of how low they are, but that is just my opinon on them.

What do you mean "mess with the spring rate"? You cannot adjust the spring rates.

Why do you think that doesn't apply here?

I think it does if we are talking about ride quality, however, my opinon of ride quality, and yours is two completly different things.

My friend thinks my car ride great, but I totaly disagree.

With his budget, Koni/gc would fit it perfectly. Why? His choice of spring rates, to suit what he wants from the car. Also, The coilovers, as well as the Koni shocks offer a lifetime warranty. (if you buy them new)

Does Skunk2 offer a lifetime warranty? No they don't. A year if I am not mistaken.

For the quesiton about LCA's, Function7 really is your best bet. lifetime warranty, with great bushings, and a company that stands behind the product.

Another great choice is to simply keep the stock arms, and replace the bushings with something harder. ES, PIC, Hardrace, and if you have the money to spare, Mugen or go all out and get sphericals.

Why do you want a camber kit?

Really. If you are going with Progress you can't drop it low enough where you would need a camber kit. Not where it would still be under warranty or the ride quality would be worth a shit.
