Brake Fade. Ive got it bad. Need to upgrade. Stock Crx si 4 wheel disk
Hey guys, I am not happy with my crx's current brake setup. It has standard size oem 1989 Crx si 4 wheel disk brakes. But I am using aftermarket crossed drilled and slotted rotors I got off ebay (no name) and the pads that came in my rebuilt calipers. Goodridge stainless lines, fresh bled fluid.
They stop fine in traffic and regular driving, but during a few hard stops or braking from high speed, you can definitely feel it fade and stop grabbing near as hard. My rotors are in good shape so i am not sure if I need to buy new there or not
I am looking to upgrade without braking the bank.
Would a pad upgrade be enough to improve stopping power? Can I do that on rotors that already have 5,000 miles on them?
Open to suggestions!! I would like to avoid doing any caliper/rotor size increases at this time. I do have a set of factory honda front pads, and some Hawk Ferrero Carbon pads I got a few years ago in a trade. But only the front pads

Would it be adviseable to go with an aggressive race material type pad to rid of brake fade?
Or simply quality brands (EBC and Hawk are the first brands to come to mind)

Have you ever heard of Project Mu? I've heard a lot of good things about them on various forums. They cost a little more than most but they make great pads. They have HC+800 pads to prevent brake fade. They're rated for rotor temperatures up to 800 C or approx. 1500 F.

Pads is all you need, get a decent brand all round, do not go for race pads for a daily though.

I love my hawk hps pad. A lot of brake dust but stopping has been phenomenal.

Im currently running zinc plated generic rotors off ebay, they dont show any signs or warpage or grooving at all. But would it be stupid to just change the pads and leave the rotors?
Not sure if quality pads need a fresh surface to burnish into or such, or if the 5k miles Ive put on these rotors is enough to warrant buying others, but I would hate to not get any benefit of the expensive pad

i would go with hawk hp+ if you dont mind DUST and a squeak here and there.
i noticed a better improvement in braking torque/pedal feel by swapping pads than going with an oem bbk with regular no name pads

Most of the time all you need are pads. I just ordered a new set of Hawk HPS to replace all 4 corners. I would've gone with Axxis Ultimates but I seem to have a hard time finding pads for the rear for my GSR so I settled with Hawk HPS which was my back up choice anyways. Resurfacing your rotor wouldn't hurt as a possible solution. But most definitely new pads would do the job. And like others have said, if it's just a DD, no need for Hawk HP+

Resurfacing the rotors are always a good idea when installing new pads. Unfortunately with crappy slotted and drilled rotors, you are unable to resurface. I would ditch the cheap rotors as well and get some centric blanks and lose the ricer rotors!!!

Do you guys think the Hawk brake predator pads are to aggressive for daily? Since I have them I kind of want to try them out.
But cant find much of any info on them, they must be discontinued Ive had them for quite some years

honestly, there are a lot better/equal pads than Hawk that produce a lot less dust. people treat Hawk like Koni/GC when referring to suspensions. I'm still using my Axxis ULT pads (can't track in them unfortunately) and switching to Carbotech. Was a toss between that or Cobalt.
also, don't think they make predator pads anymore

I didn't like the Axxis pads when I tried them. They took a while to heat up-no bite, weak pedal feel. I've been using Akebono pads for at least a decade now. Fantastic stopping power and very little in the way of brake dust.

i used Akebono pads on my Land Cruiser. Lasted almost 4 years and not a single negative thing to say about them. Brake dust was very minimal with the ceramic pads
