Default 2007 Honda Odyssey rear suspension

I have a 2007 Honda Odyssey and the rear end is bottoming out super easy. With a couple adults in the back or bikes on the back it's sagging right down. With that weight and on the highway i'll get the odd thud going over bumps. The shocks seem fine, my mechanic said so too. What could the issue be?

When did the issue start? Or has it always been that way?

We've only had the Van a year. We first noticed when doing a road trip with a few adults in the back.

Did you ever figure out the problem? We are having the same issue with our 2007 Honda Odyssey. We replaced the shocks and struts at 89,000 miles (we now have 93,000 on it). Before we had them replaced we did not notice an issue with the back end sagging and bottoming out when we would hit bumps or go into driveways when we only had a couple small teenage girls in the back seat. Now we are having the issue. When we talked to the people about it being a problem with the shocks and struts, they keep looking at them and saying they look fine. But then someone else mentioned the springs. Anybody with any thought would be great!

Hey Cydmom,
I haven't figured out the issue yet. My mechanic is going to look at it next week. I may even get him to put a stiffer shock in the back. With 4 kids and gear I'd rather have a stiffer back end then risk the issue continuing after investing in new parts.

Springs hold the car up. Shocks just damp the spring oscillation. The shocks would have to be stiffer in COMPRESSION damping for them help with bottomming out. And even then...the help would only be slight.

Rebound stiffness in a shock doesn't help keep it off the bumpstop...but it will help with the big bounce you feel after hitting the bumpstop.

I would assume the issue with hitting the bumpstops always existed. Maybe you guys are sensing the lack of rebound damping? New shocks might be worth a shot.

Buy them from Honda or some reputable supplier. I wouldn't go for Monroe or other part store brands

Hey Cydmom,

We replaced the rear shocks and put a more heavy duty shock in. Rather than replacing the springs right ($300) away we put a spacer in them ($10) to lift the van up a couple inches just to see what happens and all has been good. We didn't have very much space in the wheel wells so the spring lifts just put it back to normal.

Had same issues it's the springs 100%. Springs are not just to hold height. Steel gets tired and weakens. I was hitting rear bump stops. Replaced shocks.. same problem.

I see everywhere people say sprinfs just set ride height. But real life experience says it's utter Bullshet. Springs if weak severely affect suspension performance.. shock absorbers are not enough to keep your car straight on corners.

Once u replace rear springs u will stop hitting bump stops
