Is a 12 ton hydraulic press sufficient?

Hi,
I have an EK Civic.

Will a 12 ton hydraulic press meet the demands of pressing out my suspension bushings (all of them) or should I go bigger?

This is what I'm looking at:

Thanks!

Yes, the pressure is enough, but those designs are shit. It will take a 2 hour job and turn it into an 8 hour nightmare. You'll discover swear words you never knew existed.

Re: Is a 12 ton hydraulic press sufficient?

I'm not sure 12 tons (at least in that design) is necessarily enough to remove seized bushings. I used a 20 ton press and it had some trouble on the LCA. You might need to do some burning/cutting.

12 is plenty for installation, though.

I just put a guide in the Integra forum describing how to replace bushings. You should check it out as most of the info in the guide will apply to you:

Good feed back. I think I'm going to play it safe and look for a 20 ton press

What is a better press design?

Thanks guys

This doesn't utilize a press cylinder (like a jack) that sways back and forth as you try to steady it.

If you're going to use this often, here's my recommendation:

I have a 12-ton press just like the OP listed. I just used it last week to press out the UCA bushings on my Integra. Didn't have any issues.

Re: Is a 12 ton hydraulic press sufficient?

UCA bushings are significantly easier to remove than LCA bushings. But I know some people have gotten LCA bushings out with the 12 ton press also. I also know some people haven't been able to :/

Of course, there are other ways to get the bushings out or to weaken them to make extraction easier.

my friend's acura dealer only has a 12 ton press.

They probably never do bushings. In fact, they probably never INSPECT bushings outside of the front compliance bushings on RSX's and newer cars.

I'm about to buy a 20 ton press and notice that a few have a sliding ram..which would seem a bonus - as long as the ram can be securely locked in place. Has anyone any experience of this specific type of press?

Thanks in anticipation

20 ton wouldn't budge my bushings. I ended up burning them out.

With that said, I did UCA bushings for my buddy with my 20 ton. Worked like a champ. I would try with the press, if it doesn't work burn them.
