Default venting: Stolen ECU

i reported my car break-in to the cops...
is there anyway to track these?
theives stole my P28 this past weekend thats all they took!

any way to know if the ecu is good be4 i randomly buy one?

cant always trust people when they say "yeah it works"

and does anyone know how to distinctly tell if its auto or manual ecu? i've come across threads that talk about the p28-XXX numbers., is that the only way?
