Helping a Friend Blueprint His N/A K24A2 Build
A friend of mine knows I had blueprinted my own B18C1 turbo build, so he asked me to help him with planning out the build for a K24A2 he pulled from a TSX that he intents to swap into his Scion FR-S.
In general, I do not know much about K-Series engines, but I like researching so I went ahead and started putting together a list of parts and resources/information. I've done plenty of searching, but I haven't really found anything that nails exactly what he is looking for. He is looking to make 250-300whp naturally aspirated with Kinsler x Drag Cartel ITBs, revving up to 9000rpm with a consistent torque curve, all while retaining the K24A2 head with a CNC port and polish. Most K-Series threads/builds I find involve mostly stock bottom ends with K20 head swaps, cams, upgraded intake manifolds, and not much else. Although his power goal has been achieved by others with stock bottom ends, he insists on building up the block, which I agree with if he really aims to rev a K24A2 that high. He does a lot of spirited/aggressive driving, especially at local CA tracks like Thunder Hill, but would like to retain streetability.
Like previously mentioned, I do not know much about K-Series engines, but I am putting together a list to help him out. I just wanted to gather some thoughts, opinions and info that may help us figure out what he needs. Thanks!
- K24A2 RBB Cylinder Head; CNC port and polish (I believe the motor was pulled from an 2004 TSX, so it should have the 35mm intake valves)
- Kinsler x Drag Cartel ITBs; These are customizable with various sizes for throttle diameter and runner length; I assume a throttle size in the 57-60mm range and longer runners would work for his needs?
- Cam Gears; looking at aftermarket adjustable gears and the different VTC gears for the intake cam; Drag Cartel seems to make modified VTC gears for various degrees, and of course there is the 50 degree gear
- Camshafts; still doing a lot of reading on the plethora of options out there; I'm currently looking into the Drag Cartel 3.2s or the Toda Spec Cs. Something with larger primary lobes for a smoother torque curve?
- Valvetrain; currently looking into the various dual spring and steel/titanium retainer offerings out there, is there any benefit to beehive springs? Besides this, just stock/OEM valves, LMAs, keepers, seats, seals, guides, etc.
- Pistons; aiming for 87.5mm 4032 alloy pistons from Mahle or Supertech, with a static compression ratio between 11.5:1 and 12.5:1 on 91 octane; any piston skirt clearance issues with the oil squirters like on the B18C?
- Rods; currently looking into standard H-beams (Eagle, Manley, Brian Crower, SpeedFactory Racing, etc.) with ARP 2000 rod bolts would I-beams serve him better considering the 99mm stroke of the K24A2 block?
- Exhaust manifold; supposedly he has multiple fabricators willing to help him out with a customer header. Something along the lines of a DTR piece?
- 3 inch exhaust
- ARP head studs
- Cometic 87.5mm 0.30" head gasket
- Main and rod bearing choice depends on who assembles the motor for him
- Stock K24A2 crankshaft (main and rod
- ATI Street Damper
- K20A Type S Oil Pump Upgrade
- Balance Shaft delete
Does the little I have seem to make sense for his goals? Just trying to help my friend out and hopefully learn more, myself. Any and all input is appreciated!
