Pls don't move this, it's a general question. long story short I have a 1989 IROC-Z28 in my garage that I need to get running, it was driven in there 10 years ago and sat since, garage was heated/dry. I'm 100% the gas is bad but how/if can I "purge" the lines/injectors I'll do new plugs etc but that's easy. Basically I need all the old gas out of the lines I can drain the tank i'm sure or syphon it out.


350 TPI engine not sure if that varies much from EFI.

 

use carb cleaner to keep the engine running long enough to burn out the old fuel in the lines, after filling the tank with fresh 93 octane fuel mixed with a can of seafoam. then run the car for awhile on the 93 octane mixture, allowing it to warm up to temp. Watch for leaks from coolant, oil, fuel, etc. Expect lots of smoking from the tailpipes for awhile.

 

Do you have a cowl induction hood on that bad boy? I will pay to have it shipped to me.

 

before you start it, get some marvel mystery oil and pour a cap full in each cylinder.

at when you open the gas cap on the side, does it have an odor ( besides a gas smell .. ? like a varnish )

if it was me, I would get as much of the old fuel out as possible and add new fuel into the system .. if I remember right ( I used to have a 92 RS ), the injector(s) gum up after awhile if not spun ever so often ..

 

on top of the Marvels tip, pull all the plugs and rotate it by hand a few times to make sure everything is nice and smooth. worse thing to do is try and crank it on the starter if a ring is stuck

 

yes do the marvel mystery oil. it will soak into the piston rings and soften them up a bit before you try to spin up the old *** motor

That would work on car that has ran regularly in a way that's like saying use CC on the first start up of a new build new fuel is a must here.


It's not the same gas smell I get from my tsx or civic but not varnish as far as I can tell. Yah but how do I get the old fuel out just keep priming the pump after I drain the tank(if possible), I imagine the fuel receded back into the lines from the filter. Any car I have owned with a fuel pressure gauge on the filter(firewall) or rail had it drop after a few hours, so i'll try and see if there's fuel in the line to the "rails"(V8). 10 years no one touched it as far as I know



MMO may be one of those things we don't have in Canada but I will look and just rotate it via the pulley bolt.

I'd drop the gas tank to drain it.

I'd suggest changing the fuel filter as well, remember to unpressurize the fuel rail first if fuel injected. And all other filters and fluids, PCV Valve, cooling & vacuum hoses. The transmission filter (if automatic) and rear axle fluid. Flush the brake fluid too, check for caliper function and possibly change brake pads/shoes. Inspect bushing in the entire suspension, and the struts/shocks for leakage.

cars that have sat unused or not properly prepared for storage really need a thorough going over. Same for poorly maintained cars.

never hurts to err on the side of caution.
