If he’s a mechanic take it back to him and have him fix it.
if it’s your buddy who thinks he’s a mechanic, tell him he’s an idiot and learn how to fix these things yourself because he doesn’t know any better than you.

They've been doing that for years to help quell differential noise in sharp turning conditions. I had a 94 LS one year and the dealer installed ATF as I was getting differential noise, it was a recommended fix by Honda. I personally do not like that, so I would prefer to have a good MTF in there, it won't harm anything in the short term, and maybe not even in the long term but why chance it.

There is a reason why they make ATF and MTF. Use the correct stuff. As for the so-called mechanic, tell his *** he is INCOMPETENT

In my truck I cut the gear oil with atf so I can shift it in the winter. Atf has a friction modifer, the oil moves off surfaces where friction is needed. I can't say is right eather but It will work. There is a lot of manual transmissions that take atf like the t56 and the zf5 Ford recommends mercon v. How did it shift anyway?

yeah me, I took my 94 integra (back in 94) to the Acura dealer due to differential whine in tight turning situations, they drained the mtf and installed ATF as per Honda's recommendation. The vehicle was still new and under warranty back then. It did fix the diff whine As noted above many vehicles including BMW and Mercedes use ATF in manual trannies, the Tremec tranny known to power some of the heaviest torque vehicles in North America uses ATF. I personally prefer a good MTF but running ATF won't kill your tranny so no need to panic. I would still dump it at some point in time for peace of mind if you are no comfortable with it.

The old cable 5-speeds can run engine oil (I forget if it is 5W30 or 10W30) or Honda MTF. I have Honda MTF in mine. I work at a Honda dealership and I've never seen ATF used in the manual transmissions. However, as stated in some of the above posts, I have seen ATF used in some manuals to correct noises, and my Camaro's factory T5 manual transmission runs ATF.
With all that in mind, I'd say if you are not experiencing any noises or issues that ATF might fix, I'd recommend flushing it all out and filling the trans back up with Honda/Acura MTF.

Not too much to worry about in terms of possible damage as Auto tranny fluid is designed not to thin at higher temps, it has lots of anti-wear additives, and is friction modified to allow smooth shifts, so it can work fine in a manual tranny. Also Honda MTF2 tranny fluid is very close in viscosity to an auto tranny fluid, not far off. The older Honda MTF was a bit thicker, but when they changed to MTF2 it got thinner. But as I noted previously I would still want to run a good MTF in my tranny, I've actually gone thicker with Redline MTL.

drain it and just literally stick a funnel in the fill port and pour 5w20 synthetic oil in until it comes out the fill port and you are done

The Honda manual calls for 5W20 oil as replacement MTF.
