Sounds like a blow-by gas problem due to worn piston rings and/or a clogged PCV valve or hose.

In my opinion, you are putting the cart before the horse.

How many miles on the D16Y7 engine?

Drain the coolant and oil and inspect them. Remove valve cover and inspect the oil there.

Could be ICM, coil, or something else. When the engine won't start immediately, check for spark at the plugs. If there's no spark, then you may be on the right track, if the coil is good.

Sounds like a bad ECU. If so, you can either replace the ECU or the ECU electrolytic capacitors.

Cranking that sounds like no compression also could be due to cylinders flooding with fuel.

Also check for bright white spark at the plugs.

When the engine does not start, turn key to ON(II) position. Does the fuel pump prime? Does the CEL turn on for 2 seconds and then turn off?

Before you install a known good ECU, triple check for swapped sensor connectors because you don't want to fry a good ECU.
