Really nice driving rice, that track is pretty new like in the last 6 months right? It looks pretty awesome especially for club racing/de's.

Yes I think pavement is right around 6 months old. Truly virgin surface. Surprisingly good grip when wet (it was wet in the morning half) and just like driving at ORP when it was new, always mind boggling grip in the dry. It made my 40 session old Hankooks feel like they were brand new. Just nothing like a new racetrack!
After the straight, count the turns. The big left hand sweeper (turn 6), called the carousel, has a seam in it. I found that it's really fast to take a line between entering and exiting where you are going outside back to inside crossing over that seam but then what I really noticed is that the seem really upset the car and the "correction" from the upset caused a loss in lap time.
The distance between the exit of the carousel (turn 6) to the next braking or even "lifting" zone is so short that maximizing exit speed (as opposed to corning/apex speed) isn't as important and during a race, for the sake of speed and consistency, it make sense to stay on the inside of the seam. At least, this is my determination.
I can't wait to get back there when some of the agricultural work is done so that I'm no afraid to leave the racing surface if I "get it wrong". This will allow me to commit to a couple corners I was a little hesitant in, like T1 and WOT entry to T4 from exit of T3.
This has been an evening with Rice, now back to your regularly scheduled program.

THUNDERHILL Race April 8 2012
Thunderhill April 8 with Northern California Racing Club (NCRC) at Thunderhill. Great wheel to wheel with mixed group of cars including two other similar prepped Civics. My second weekend in a race group, this particular session just flat out rocked!

THUNDERHILL Race April 8 2012
Thanks, but I wouldn't draw any conclusions from the video. Those guys are in "just-having-fun" mode. However, it was a real eye-opener being near them. They have solutions and strategies for things I didn't know existed.

World Class Dirt Clod Launch...
Just for fun, a two minute summary of my slide fest at Thunderhill this past weekend. Rear view cam only (front cam files corrupted). I did manage to win both days in a very hotly contested group of TTC drivers. Within a 4/10's of track record in doing so. Pushing limits both days. 2:00:9 on Saturday and 2:01:4 Sunday ftw(s).
The first slide begs the question: "Was it still a slide if your still 'driving' around the next corner at speed?" Probably if you were still sideways! What I attempted to do in the first slide would have been catastrophically wrong in traffic as I would have crossed the track and may have hit someone. Maybe I learned something on the second slide, I went off and stayed off until under control. No matter what, the whole thing bugged me all day. Fortunately no damage of any kind.

David,
Great job. You are really putting it together and getting a lot faster with each outing. A testement tot he methiodical, planned approach you have taken to gaining speed, and not a little bit of natural ability! Kudos for putting it to those guys last weekend! The NCRC race at thunderhill June 30th should be a hoot!

I dunno... 180whp in a gutted civic should move quite well. I'm guessing 2200lbs... that's 12lbs/hp. Although I was thinking "Why doesn't he heel-toe?", but different strokes for different folks. I would say, try being smoother on the wheel... but, I've been known to toss a FWD car to make it turn.

I was going to rig a cam just to get that shot of the tire deflection. What tire and size are those?

His car is 2350....168 WHP last I heard.more like 1:14 power to weight. Great suspension, external resevoir set-up, hoosiers, but still very well driven....

Re: Track Video(s) Too Good Not to Share...
my car weighs approx 2350 with driver and has been dynoed at 183whp/120tq. im not really sure bc i never got it corner weighted. i dont have external resevoirs or hoosiers, lol. but i do have a staggered tire setup along with stiffer springs in the rear that makes the car really loose even while on throttle. heel toe was something i never learned how to do
