Tow vehicles

Re: Tow vehicles
so I require 4x4 for the remote location we live in... that being said I can tow up to 9800 in my configuration. a light weight 20-22 footer will work, but a 24 footer is optimal for the car, spares, open space (to convert into a living area when we are at the track), etc. As is i carry a bunch of stuff in the car, in the truck, etc. with my open trailer. Also my tundra has 139k miles on it... how long can she tow? probably until 200k no issues (we have guys in the paddock with +250k towing still)... but with an enclosed and the mountains, that has to limit its life span. Id rather be safer than sorry.
Right now i have a 15 foot open trailer with no tire rack. the car fits on it (just well enough... miatas, civics, E30s do well)... but my storage of spares, tires/wheels, camping equipment, etc is tight.

Re: Tow vehicles
The key to deciding on the appropriate tow vehicle is how far will you be towing and what kind of terrain? If it’s just flat and less then an hour, you could comfortably go with a smaller truck or SUV with a lower capacity, but if you will be going over any passes or extended hills, your tow vehicle will suffer and better to upgrade to a full size truck or larger SUV. I tow my 93 Civic in a 20ft enclosed, with lots of extra wheels, tools, etc..with either my Nissan Armada or my wife’s VW Touareg. They both have plenty of spare towing capacity and tow very comfortably in any terrain. Last thing you want or need is a stressful drive home in a tow vehicle that’s not up to the task after a full day at the track.

Is it too late to get in on this?
I tow my swapped EF with my 2010 2.7 (4 cyl.) Tacoma (MT). I usually rent an auto transport from Uhaul and load it up at home. Longest haul Ive done is from Houston to COTA in Austin, about 3 hrs. Its not a very powerful truck but it gets the job done. I'm usually driving in 4th gear and have to downshift to 3rd when going uphill in the TX hill country. Although I've never had an issue, I am considering upgrading to a larger truck. I might get an F150 or a Tundra eventually despite that I dont care for larger trucks like that. who knows, I might just trade it in for a V6 tacoma.

Re: Tow vehicles
Another option is using a rental 1/2 ton truck from Enterprise. I'm sure other car rental co. rent trucks out too, but in my area I get the best deal from Enterprise. Plus they don't charge for unlimited mileage so it's very reasonable if you don't track your car every weekend. Or you can use the rental only on the longer
hauls, and use your smaller suv/truck for the tracks that are closer to home.
