Well pulled the rear seat and the fuel tank cover. I think I found the problem. I did just put 5gal of fuel in the car. But the fuel smells bad and also the fuel is so cloudy you cannot see the bottom of the tank.. SO I guess I am going to be pulling the tank to see that. There is also some rust in the tank.
I will keep you updated

I run a 1990 SI Hatch with about 1/4 tank. The only time I had starvation was when I got down to less than 1/8. Tad was always surprised when I told him how much fuel I ran on. But, I do hear this as a common problem usually with the 88-89 hatches.
Is there a chance the previous owner had a problem with the tank (leak, etc) and had it replaced with an 88-89 type tank?

HELL YEA!!! The previous owner is a legend around here in his auto handy work. That is the DAMN truth. So I was not really suprised when I ran into this problem.

If the tanks are different as you say, how come they have the same part numbers? And no supercedes are listed?

Re: (Andy Hollis)
i'm gonna have to side with hollis on this one. if there was a way andy could run with only 1 gallon of fuel in the tank he would have found it. this is a guy that knows there was a trailing arm supercession and what exactly was changed on the newer arms. he does his homework, trust me.

One way is to just look at the parts listings online at San Leandro. Here's an example: http://www.slhondaparts.com/br...ERTER
The clutch disc has been superceded several times. You can try and order any of those numbers, but you'll always get the most current one.
The second way (better) is to look at the actual books that still have the Honda Codes ("short number") in addition to the standard part numbers (xxxxx-xx-xxx). These Honda Codes are sequential, so all of the numbers for a given year vehicle are in the same range. Everything for the next year that changed is a much higher number. So supercedes stand out like a sore thumb when they are relisted for an earlier vehicle. I have some old parts books for 88-91 CRX and Civic that have all of this. They are out of date, though.
Finally, there is some evidence (not conclusive) in the actual number itself. For the exact same part, they tend to start out at "-010", then "-020". If you ever see something like "A10" or "J10", its very likely a latter part.
But then, you knew all that since you worked at a Honda dealership, right Ryan?

Re: (Andy Hollis)
I do work there, but I've never looked at any of the parts codes. I just tell the guys in parts to order what I need and they do the work for me. Just tell them 89 civic si and they get me whatever is listed.

andy, i dont know what to tell you. i thought at first it was because my car started out as sn 'std' model. but other 90-91 si owners also say they can run their tanks very low where as the 88-89 guys fuel starve very early.

I'm not disagreeing with the observed "symptom". I'm disagreeing on where its coming from. The only thing that makes sense that shows to be different between the years is the fuel pump assembly. Note that the assembly includes the fuel pickup and the in-tank filter. Methinks there is something different about it that does a better job of picking up fuel that's sloshing. But that's a total guess.

Well I am not having a sloshing problem. I am having a water/rust in tank problem. I have owned several EF civics and CRX and have never run into this problem. I am sure after I install the clean SI tank I got today I will have no problem running 1/4 tank of fuel

Good deal.
Did you end up replacing just the tank or did you include the fuel pump/pickup assembly?

Re: (Andy Hollis)
I put everything from this si parts car I have been getting parts from to make this car legal for STS. I did not want to take anychances with a fuel pump that has been sucking rust for no telling how long.... Finished it just in time for EVO school on saturday
