Which oil for race car with high oil consumption?
My B18C seems to use a ton of oil on the track. I'm thinking of switching to a higher viscosity (running 10W40 motul now). Is there any reason not to do this? I'm doing a 3-hour enduro Saturday and don't want to have to add oil all the time if possible. Thanks.

Pre-mix.
I started using 20-50 Valvoline synpower (changed from 0-40 Mobil 1) in the bimmer and it's cut the oil consumption in half, from more than a whole quart per 3000 miles to about 1 quart in 5,000.

what's the downside to running high viscosity? how the car runs when cold? loss of power?

running that thick oil will give you more of a "dry startup" syndrome when it is cold out; oil will be very thick and slow to get up thru the engine to the head. with my old Super Seven, this was very noticable in below 50 degree weather; engine would start and there would be no pressure reading on the gauge for some seconds!
you will have to thoroughly warm the motor gently before going out on the track.
and yes, you will lose power pumping the more viscous oil around; at least til it warms up to 200+ degrees.
last thing to think about is the close tolerances that the honda motor is built to. my old cross-flow 1600 is loose and sloppy from when it was built new; therefore i run 20w-50 racing oil in fall and spring and straight 50 racing oil in summer. the honda is very "tight"; i don't think that kind of heavy oil would be good for it; just my thoughts; i'm no oil expert.
i've never had an oil related problem with any of my racecars; i run 5w-30 synthetic in the honda and probe year round; no problems. i run the 20w-50 racing oil (not synth) and 50 wt racing oil (not synth) in the lotus; engine builder told me not to use synth in the older cross-flow; i didn't argue!!!!
good luck at the enduro. and if i were you, i'd check the oil at every stop. it doesn't take long and might save a very expensive motor.....

Viscosity is temperature dependent - so pick an oil based on its protection (i.e. shear resistance - HTHS) and its viscosity @ the temperatures you plan on seeing.
If you are doing enduros in the summertime, you will want a 15w50 or 10w60 or similar because the engine will be HOT for long periods of time. For cold weather or street driving, a 0w30/ 5w30 / 5w20 is better becuase you will not see high temps on the motor.

Not scientific, but my well worn B18C1 seems to eat less Mobil1 10W30 then RedLine 10W30.

redline sheers at a higher temp than mobil1, so not sure what your situation proves

Yeah I'm going to switch out of my Mobil1 15W50 in a few weeks, staring at the oil pressure gauge reading 0 at startup is a little unnerving.

Civic 44 out of curiosity do you have a general esitmate of your oil consumption rate? Being the owner of a B18c I am would like to know. Thanks.

It seems to use a half liter during a 20-25 minute session on track, yet almost none on the street.

my b18c does the same thing. on the street and autoX about 1/2 liter for 5000 km. But on the track is about 1/2 a liter for 40 mins.
I guess it is the nature of the beast.............i use Motul 10w40 now.... i used 15w50 Mobil1 before, but when i was cold out (10 C or less) it would take some time (>1sec) for me to see oil pressure and it would take some time to clim to ~80 psi when the idel was 2000 rpm (cold)....
