Re: The Official Formula 1 2018 Season Thread
Stupid me refused a Mario Andretti autograph at Long Beach or Sonoma a few years ago. It was at the Honda booth and they just finished up autograph sessions with Mario, Arie, and another driver. Mario was walking away with a hand held fan (picture of his face on an oversized tongue depressor). It was the last one on the table he was at and was unsigned. I was taking pics of the IndyCar show car in Honda's booth and he asked if I wanted the fan and he'd autograph it for me. I don't get starstruck and I said "No thank you Mario". I think he signed it and gave it to another attendee standing nearby. I later realized that he's considered a legend and that having his autograph would be a cool thing to have.

at first i thought you refused to give him an autograph
you still have the memory of dissing him and that means more than a rando signature anyway

I read that the fatality was from head trauma, probably from having her head hit the frame of the window with a few hundred pounds of pressure differential. Being sucked out alone would be a bummer but not necessarily fatal - remember the pilot that got sucked out and had his legs held by a flight attendant or something, all the way down. He survived (barely tho...)
The media reporting witness accounts are doing a disservice to facts. Passengers reported that the plane was in 'free fall' and they felt like the pilot regained control after it had 'fallen a while'. The crew simply nosed the plane over and started down in a relatively normal descent. I think they got down from 30,000ft to 11,000ft in 5 minutes? That is a bit on the aggressive side, but nothing that any passenger would notice as unusual on a normal day.
There is a liveATC video put together on youtube that follows the crew & ATC transmissions as they went from sector to sector. Everyone was calm and professional the whole way in.
Edit: I've always thought I was being stupid not wanting to sit in the plane of rotation of a turboprop or the fan of a jet engine.... I guess not

Re: The Official Formula 1 2018 Season Thread
i think turboprops have tossed a prop directly into the cabin and killed someone but with a 500mph windstream between me and a 737 engine i don't think i'd fret over sitting adjacent to it.
after seeing the cowling disintegrate and pop out a window 10 rows back it looks like it's safer to be sitting up abeam of the engine
statistically it's still safer the farther back you go - let first class be the crumple zone if you're gonna have a compromised landing

I'm thinking more of during take-off, when loads on the engine are the highest.
When a blade comes off a propeller-driven aircraft, the blade usually shoots out ahead of the engine (slightly) because its whats making all the thrust. In that case though, it usually works out badly for everyone, as the weight imbalance will tear the engine from the mount, and at that point the CG is so rekt that it won't keep flying.

I had to swap out the transmission in my truck yesterday. Another 4L60e bites the dust (3/4 clutch pack toast).
Not that much fun, even with a lift. But saving $1500 is saving $1500.

I do like me a King Air tho. The blade failures I've seen on those (just one honestly, and that was because it hit a ground vehicle) put the blade through the nose, ahead of the pilot.

i can't afford a twin of any kind so i don't have to worry about that one
in other news i'm delighted to see more GA aircraft with ADS-B transponders. i am tracking a lot more planes lately with a $20 USB dongle. looks like almost everybody needs it by 1/1/2020. i wish they required it on drones

Cost.
Both in purchase price and modifications; they're not the same dimensions as the 4L60, so I'd have to modify drive shafts and the like to get it to work. Soft pass on that.
If I ever get around to doing a LQ4/LS3 swap, I'll just have the 4L60 upgraded to 4L65-ish specs.

Mercedes could help solve Williams problem?
Mercedes could help solve Williams problem?
Under the technical leadership of former Mercedes chief Paddy Lowe, Williams' 2018 car is among the very slowest on the grid.
Germany's Auto Motor und Sport reports that a major issue is the cooling system."Paddy Lowe wanted to copy the cooling system of his former team Mercedes, but the concept is complicated and apparently Williams made a mistake," correspondent Michael Schmidt explained. "Now the bodywork has to be opened up completely and that costs a lot of downforce."

i thought some of the cars were making an old familiar sound on corner entry at the last race, and now i see today there's news about the FIA clamping down on exhaust blowing.

I forgot which team it was, but they had heat shielding on the underside of the rear wing main flap. Sneaky buggers.
