Hmmm...some FIA seats HAVE to run back braces.
I thought all FIA homologated seats weren't supposed to use back braces. And then I see the list of homologated seats and what do I see. Some seats are homologated using both lateral AND back braces. The Racetech 4009HRV is one of them. It makes me wonder if back braces are all that bad in the first place.

There are several different FIA certifications for seats. Only those with 8885-1999 are braceless.

Re: Hmmm...some FIA seats HAVE to run back braces. (Grumpy)
his link is a list of all 8885-1999 homologated seats.
that last column indicates the mount type: side mount or bottom mount. And he is correct that for a few seats, they indicate the side mount AND back mount.
the Racetech seats in question are the Dodge Viper-specific seats (I ***-u-me that is an OEM mount placement) and one other model that also offers a back mount.
The whole controversy about back mounts is that some seats are designed to be back mounted:
- all aluminium seats
- apparently 3 Racetech models
other are NOT designed for a back mount:
- all other composite seats (fiberglass, carbon, kevlar, etc)
as long as the seat is mounted in the way it was designed to, all is good, IMO.

Re: Hmmm...some FIA seats HAVE to run back braces. (SJR)
Following this train of thought....
My Momo Cup hits the 5 year mark in May of '06, which ends its FIA legality rating.
Can I install a back brace and continue to use it till the cows come home? Or am I stuck buying a new seat every 5 years if I don't want to use a back brace (and I really don't, unless someone designs one with an inline compression shock absorber)?

That true. But I still believe that ALL seats should have a back brace. Not necessarily a mount, but a brace really should be added to all of them. Its just a good idea I think...

actually the FIA seats that are designed to not use a brace need to be able to flex to absorb the impact. If you brace it, you lose that energy absorbnig flex. not good. A rigid seat (like an aluminium seat) will not flex and needs to be braced so that it doesn't break on impact.
don't brace a seat that wasn't designed for it.

So what is your opinion of a over five year old FIA 8885-1999 seat?
Scrap it or brace it?
Brace it takes out the flex but should make it no worse than a aluminum seat with brace. I agree that a FIA 8885-1999 less than five years should not be braced.

It hurts to think about it but having tipped the Golf over now, and being able to feel the seat flexing around absorbing energy, I'd vote "sell it for HPDE use."
