Friend welded heeltoe oil pan baffles all the way around inner edge of oil pan.... bad?

I had a buddy weld in my heeltoe oil pan baffles for my b16a. I gave him the instructions but I'm not sure if he followed them exactly. From all the pics of the baffles I see, there is space between the edge of the baffle and inner edge of the oil pan for the oil to pass down to the pickup. He has a beed around the whole thing. I don't have the instructions anymore because he threw them away. I'm pretty sure this is a bad thing, but I want to make sure before I spend another 4 hours taking it back off.

Should I just wait and keep an eye on the oil pressure guage?

here's your other problem by welding such large beads i'm sure he got the pant pretty hot which probably warped the pan

I didn't take any pics before I installed it on the car. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emsad.gif He did it in segments so that it wouldn't warp the pan.

Here's mine before paint. Low heat: no warpage.

i wouldn't think it'd need to be welded all the way around, half-inch stitch welds spaced half-inch or so apart would be fine. that way you also have some places for the oil to drain back down. i suppose you could drill some holes if you are concerned but not too many to defeat the purpose of the baffle.

brokenojoke 04-16-2006 11:46 AM

I thought about drilling holes.....

but I'm just going to wait and see. Unless someone has done this and had catastrophic engine failure due to no oil pressure, trial and error will be my test. In the back of my head I want a B20 bottom end anyway..... https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif But I'd still like to run this season without a rebuild.

Any other first hand experience........

Thawley,
I have a heel toe baffle plate which I have not had welded in yet. My question is how high up from the bottom of the pan do you weld it in. As in how do you know you are doing it right or is the height all that critical. Thanks.

IMO, those baffles should be spaced away from the edge of the pan (intake and exhaust side of the pan) to allow oil to drain back faster along the edge of the pan, and the inside edges should be rolled down to trap oil in the sump.

man to me that looks so unsafe without a trap door type setup . when the pickup is there it seems like oil will get backed up above the baffles.....

It just goes right on top of the factory baffling: flush fit. Once you get the pan off and set it in there it will be pretty self explanatory.

The pick-up goes to the bottom of the pan thru the hole. It does not occupy the hole. Certainly a hammer-head pan with hinged baffles would be ideal. But those are hard to find for the $19 that the Heel-Toe kit costs...

The entire point of using these inserts is to keep oil near the pick-up. The same holes or spaces you are thinking about to allow oil to drain down would also allow oil to move away from the pick-up under high G-loads. As for rolled inside edges, that would indeed be desirable design feature. The Mugen pans are like that.

I've had no problems since I've put it in the car at the beginning of this season. (That's 4-sprints and a 3-hour enduro, without issue.) But I haven't run the one track where I lost my engine last year: Willow Springs. Turn-2 and turn-8 will be the acid test...

What can I say? Maybe I've already blown my motor and I just haven't noticed...

Re: I thought about drilling holes..... (.RJ)

the mugen pan looks like a much better design than the weld in fastline performance kit . i could be wrong but especially with it fully welded and not stitch welded . the mugen would promote better flow to the bottom of the pan.

Re: I thought about drilling holes..... (Hella_JDM)

The problem is the mugen pan doesnt work with the non-vtec oil pick ups. I dont know if you can swap pick ups and use the pan though.

brokenojoke 04-16-2006 06:49 PM

From the looks of it....

There is a slight space for the oil to seep back down on the Mugen pan compared to the completely welded version on my car.... but it doesn't look like enough to say that they did that on purpose.... With Mugen, everything is on purpose... I assume. Hell I don't know. The rolled inside edges are very nice though. Maybe heeltoe will sell those inserts for 30 bucks soon. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

Damn, I would have just bought the Mugen pan after all this shit. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emsad.gif oh well. I'll run what I brung. I just thought for 20 bucks, what the hell. Now if it's going to be a liability, that pretty much SUCKS.

I'm sure it's a good product. And only $270-400. http://kingmotorsports.com/product.asp?product=12 If that's what's going to make you happy, that's what you should get. I'm pretty happy with the way my money was spent.

Re: I thought about drilling holes..... (thawley)

I have the money to get the Mugen pan, but I didn't see that much of a difference to justify waiting 6 weeks for it when I called King. Too late now, if motor goes, B20 bottom end and Mugen pan for sure.... if they even make one for that app.

Thanks for all the replys guys. I'll post vids of it blowing up if it goes. :0 I doubt it will though. I always have a camera in the car. This year new HD cameras too.... https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif Benefit of working at Major electronics chain.

Anyone have a 1080I upconverting dvd player...?? If so, let me know I'll send you come cool shit after editing this season.

lol you should have asked me... I have a sickspeed kit, I use to cut out my own from 24ga.... then I weld them in the pans. I did one for a guys future H4 car here in the MA region.
