I'm hearing the NT01 is the same compound as the RA1 with a different tread pattern. Can anyone confirm this????

I have used the RA1s in the past and will be using the NT01 this year (this weeekend in fact). Tread pattern is very different.. much bigger blocks on the NT01. You don't have to shave the Nittos like you do the Toyos.

Also, I have heard the compound is the same but the sidewall of teh NT01 is stiffer.

whoa! this is news to me. so is NITTO US exclusive? or is it in japan too.

and someone go into further about the relationship between michellin and BFG? does michellin simply own them or do they share the same tire compounds, etc.

Toyo's image in Japan is a manufacturer of JUNK OEM tires for the car manufacturers. More then 10 years ago, they got a bright idea to bring these Junk tires to US under Nitto when Sport Compact market was at peak. They made a huge profit in getting all the Ricers suckered into their tires. I never forget what crap those NT-455 was back in mid 90's!

Agree that the 455's were ****, but the 501's were fantastic.

Michelin bought BFG and swallowed the company whole.

Sharing tire compounds depends on what they are trying to do. They may develop and sell one tire under the Michelin brand and they may develop another under the BFG brand, or they may share the compound. Same thing as GM may sell the same drivetrain in cars sold as a Saturn and a Pontiac (e.g. Sky and Solstice).

There are lots of other examples of consolidation in the tire industry. Goodyear and Sumitomo entered a worldwide alliance that has them basically working as one company. They also own the Dunlop and Falken brands. So basically, Goodyear, Sumitomo, Dunlop, and Falken tires are all made by one company.

And they bought Uniroyal shortly there after. There are very few actual tire companies out there. As was stated earlier, Goodyear owns Dunlop, Kelly, etc. Bridgestone owns Firestone, Gillette, Fuzion, etc. And on and on.

One note - the Fuzion name was not a participant in the merger/acquisition activity in the tire industry; it was simply a new brand name introduced by Bridgestone (to appeal to the tuner car market).

I don't work in the tire industry, and never did. I found that graph on Bridgestone's website.

The Gillette brand name for men's hygiene products is owned by P&G (formerly called Procter and Gamble).

I've worked in "tire shops" for the last 12 years. Gillette is also a brand of tire that Bridgestone owns.
