Default Buying a suit, what rating to get?

I am going to be buying a driver suit soon. Since the SFI rating is printed in greek on all of the labels, what is acceptable for Solo 1 and road racing (both NASA and SCCA)? I do not have the GCR for this year, so any help would be appreciated.

SFI - 5.

Generally a two layer suit. Sometimes 3 layers.

Thanks Scott! I didn't know the difference between the 3 and 5.

1 and (most) 2 layer suits must be worn with Nomex underwear, which is a real pain. I found it much easier to use a 3 layer suit. I can just put it on over my shorts and t-shirt instead of having to strip down, put on the nomex underwear, etc.

FWIW, I have both a Sparco and OMP suit and have found both to be excellent. Both get a lot of use (~40 days/year total) and neither have had any problems with the zippers, stitching or anything else.

Yeah I am with raod Racer, SFI 5. Suits and helmets are the parts you don't save money on.

I have a SFI 5 suit and agree it's the best. Granted safety wear is not an area to be cheap about; however, when you are at Savannah in August, where the temp is 100 degrees, 80% humidty, no wind, sunny and your sitting in your car in full race gear....you tend to think if there's another suit on the market that might be a little more comfortable in that situation. Just something to think about...
