I've always sprayed it similar to clear and check for full coverage.

Either that guy was messin with you or he's not one to take advice from. I apply every coat of clear medium wet, little more on flat surfaces where it will flow out and I watch my sharp body body lines lines closely.

Well the exception is a non-solid single stage color, forgot to mention. Those I would apply more carefully. Honestly i've never sprayed a metalic or pearl single stage on outer body panels. Never had a reason to, any non-solid single stage's I've sprayed have been on cut in, ect.

"light mist" just sounds bad in reference to the final coat of a topcoat product.

I just layed down some single stage pearl; I layed it out down like I would normally lay down a base/clear at first; somewhat far away with a light mist coat at first. It seemed to be really dry looking. After it cured for a day; I layed it down after that real close; and real wet; and it looks amazing honestly for how cheap the paint was. I only painted an OEM SIR wing; a WW front lip; mirrors; and an engine bay with it. I still have to paint my fenders and front bumper; But i'm really starting to think if I should just fork out the $ to buy the base/clear for it because of the quality of how it comes out compared.

I would ditch the single stage idea personally.
