Default remove factory spot welds. drill or spot weld bit?

Depending on the cost of a spot weld drill bit, is it okay just to use a normal drill bit, to remove the factory spot welds? Or should I spend the cash and get the spot weld bit..

i paid 16 dollars for a spot weld bit and it was worth every penny, if they ever break they have replaceable tips that are fairly cheap too

what took me a couple hours before with bits took me maybe 20 minutes with my spot weld bit

i hasd the exact oppisite experience with the bit. I also paid around $16 but the bit broke on about the 3rd spot weld. I then used a titanium drill bit set i had and moved much faster throughout the rest of the project.

I've drilled out countless spot welds with a titanium tipped drill bit from Home Depot. I think it was about $5. I've never used anything else, so I can't say if an actual spot weld drill bit is any better.

the best part about using a spot weld bit is that it doesnt go all the way through the 2nd piece of metal so all you have to do is grind away the weld when the panel is off and you have a nice spot to put for your next weld (great for doing radiator supports etc)

I use a 5/16" dewalt self centering bit from home depot. Its kinda half way like a spot weld bit. They cost about $7-$8. The nice thing is that if your carefull they only leave about an 1/8" hole in the bottom layer when you drill.

I used a spot weld bit when removing my trans mount bracket and it sucked. It seemed to take forever. I switch to my drill bits and mad the whole process so much faster.

i dont know what spotweld bit you guys are using, but mine works awesome, has a springloaded centering tip, and the bit itself is in the shape of a hole saw, ill try n find out the brand name of it for future references

I use the spring loaded one at work and it works great. You just drill a 1/8th pilot hole, not all the way through, in the middle of the weld and then switch to the spot weld cutter. Without the hole it will take forever cause it jumps all over the place and it will not stay cutting in the same spot.
Most are meant to be used at low speeds, not like high speed drill bits. Maybe that is why they did not work great for everyone. And like mentioned, you don't drill all the way through with these. You can but the risk is lower when you still need the metal behind the piece you are cutting out to weld back onto.

i just take a sharp tipped punch and make a mark in the middle and dont have a problem with the bit jumping around

and slower speeds with the drill helps alot along with wd-40 or something like that for cutting fluid

Also a good idea but the tip on my bit is not sharp anymore LOL. I need that drill bit now. I really should get a new one. I just keep replacing the heads on it.

yea, do remember to use wd-40... if not, then that's probably why those bit keep breaking.
