It is hard to paint Carbon parts because of the type of epoxy that is use I think. I make Carbon fiber parts and paint them. The cost of the proper Epoxy that can be painted is a lot.

The clear is not the problem but the epoxy that is used to harden the Carbon fiber. If you sand into the carbon fibers it will weaken it. Where in Socal do you live?

Painting carbon fiber is just like painting anything else that is already finished...

Scuff the panel and use an adhesion promotor. As long as you know that any waves or cracks or heavy scratches in the surface will show through on the new paint job unless they are fixed, you shouldn't have any problems at all.

what brand of hood is it? Most chinese hoods all you need to do is scuff and paint. If it uses gel coats then you can paint it like you would paint any fiberglass piece

You could always spray it with a flex agent if you're worried about that kind of thing

If you want to PAINT carbon fiber correctly. you need to prime the hood with a 2k urethane, or an epoxy primer. Carbon fiber is porous and will suck up material, if you just paint directly over it you will most likely have fading, die back and color fade will most likely occur because the material is being inhaled by the c/f. You need to fill the pores first before you lay color.Prime it, and of course lay some sealer when you are painting. If you dont want it to [freak] up,i would definitely suggest you prime it first. wait a few days, sand it down and do it again.

Same goes for if you just want to reclear a carbon fiber hood, sand all the crap gelcoat or whatever it is off. Spray 3 coats of clear, let it dry for a couple days or so, unless youve baked the clear.and then sand down and reclear it again with 2 coats. And youll never have a problem. that is if your using a good clear that is worth a ****.You dont want to use a cheap clear with no u.v protectants cause youll just have to go back and do it again cause of fading and yellowing. I paint and reclear carbon fiber parts all the time at the paint shop and this method has not yet failed me in many many years. And parts that i did 4 years ago still look like the day they came out of the booth.
