Clear coat yellowed out?
Hey there.
Ok so I rattle can painted my bumper. I was very pleased with the turnout. The color matched pretty much right up. The problem I ran into is that the bumper was not as shiny as the rest of my car. I was told I didn't clear it heavy enough. I decided to try and reclear it.
The steps I took to reclear it was
-wash it
-wet sand it [2k grit] [was told that was wayyyy to soft afterward]
-wash it
-apply clear coat [3 coats]
The following morning the bumper looked sorta yellow. Not white at all. I was kinda saddenned =/.
What should I do to fix this? Should i just start over, prime, paint, and clear?
I was also told I should sand with 400 dry, wash it, paint it, then clear it.
What are my best options?
Thanks!
Matt

Re: Clear coat yellowed out? (Rukusmasta2)
to be perfectly honest, the only way to really fix it is to get it painted properly with automotive paint.
the yellowing might be soimething as simple as you have too many coats on it. you'll see yellowing over white very easily.
the problem you're going to run into is the fact that rattle can paint is not durable because it is not catalyzed. "real" clear coat is. it just means that the real clear hardens while the rattle can just dries. there's no chemical reaction taking place with rattle can paint/clear dries. basically after even a few days the spray paint might start looking hazy or dull, no matter how many coats you put on.

I used "Import auto touch up spray". The paint did look kind of matted. It was too flat. It wasn't shiny enough. I got picky and messed it up. I think I'll probably end up wiping it clean, primer, sand, primer, paint, clear. It looked real good until I tried to re clear it. I put a pic of my cousins bumper in this thread: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/2394280 He cleared his much differently then mine. His was more experimental. =P
