Long time Honda owner. This is the first one to use oil. 118k miles. About a qt/1k miles. Any ideas on how I should proceed? cheap fixes?

Issue is probably due to the piston oil control rings. You can check the PCV valve and replace it if necessary; but, that may not make a big difference if it is not clogged up.

If it is burning oil due to the oil control rings, at this point, regularly checking and adding oil would be most cost/effective.

Is it safe to assume your 09 Pilot has VCM? If so, this is likely the cause of your excessive oil consumption and is a known issue.

You could try the VCMuzzler, but it may be too late to fix the current problem that may require re-ringing your engine to properly address the issue.

Depending on when your 2009 Pilot was purchased, the warranty extension may or
may not be over. For example, a 2009 model purchased in late 2008 would have gone over the 7 year extended warranty.

You would also have to be experiencing the specified misfire codes.

The piston oil control rings would be replaced on the affected pistons if covered.

That has not been my experience with a 2006 Pilot AWD with 140,000 miles and a 2008 Ridgeline with 106,000 miles. My typical oil change intervals are 6500-7000 miles and I never have to add any oil between changes. Neither of these vehicles have VCM.

I went in to the dealer where I purchased the Pilot. Was told no recalls, TSB's or extended warranty offers. They are definitely aware of the issue and it would be around 5K to repair. I laughed and walked.
