Default registration in the hills?

was wondering if it is true you are smog exempt if your car is registered and you live up in the hills like jackson, sonora, valley springs...? have you ever heard of anything like this.? a friend from work lives up there and told me he never has to smog his cars.

It's not really "exempt" because you still can get fix-it & state ref tickets but yes there are a few countys in california that do not do smog checks... Just like how there are countys that does not require Smog Check II. You can find them on the DMV website.

its up to the cop. if he can't tell if anything is modified then you're all good. But if he is a dick and give you a state ref ticked than you're fcked.

long story short. Emission standards are state law being enforced by state refs. State law applies to every county in CA but some countys dont care enough to impliment smog check II or smog checks period because air quality is not a big concern.
