Default K20A EG Swap Problem

Hello HT,

A friend of mine and I just swapped a K20A Type R motor into an EG. Everything is hooked up, and the car cranks and starts (sometimes), but it idles rough with misfire, backfires, and shuts off on its own.

We have a Hondata KPro, and KTuned conversion harness and Chase Bays Wiring Harness. There are no codes showing.
Secondary 02 sensor is disabled, immobilizer is disabled, evap system is disabled.

The 4 grounds are connected to the Valve Cover, Transmission, Chase Bays Wiring Harness, Cylinder Head (near air intake).

We did a compression test and the numbers were:
1) 150
2) 170
3) 180
4) 205
Performing a wet test on Cylinder 1 and 2, the compression rating went up, so we probably have bad piston rings?

We're not sure why it is not running smoothly, so if anyone can please help us try and solve the problem that would be greatly appreciated. This is our first swap and we need some help/guidance. Thank you!

Timing correct? Did you make sure to set the fuel pressure to at least 50psi?

The pressure was low before, at like 30psi, but now it's up to around 55-60psi. Do you think perhaps the ecu could be an issue? For our next step, we're going to swap ecu's and see if that's the problem.

I still don't know if that could cause the compression to be so low, and vary between each cylinder like that though.

Trying a different ecu is a good call.
If you have access to compressed air do a leakdown test to determine where its losing compression.

I did a leakdown test using engine oil, on Cylinder 1 and 2, and the compression went up. Does performing this test with compressed air yield different results?

You just did a wet compression test by using oil. A leak down test is pushing compressed air into the cylinders while at top dead center. If you hear air escaping through the oil cap, it's the rings. Through the exhaust, it's exhaust valve seals. In the throttle body (while open) it's intake valve seals. Or maybe all of them are effed lol.

Ohhh okay, thank you, I will look into that.

If rings or seals are bad, do you think this would cause the motor to not stay running and idle poorly?

No, with those numbers it should run fine, just would notice blueish smoke and power loss.

Hmm, interesting. We're going to try swapping ECU's tomorrow, and will report back. Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

Another thing to check is that all injectors are working. I had to "shock" all of mine because they were stuck closed from sitting for so long. It seemed to be a common problem cause if you google it you get a lot of threads on k20a about shocking them open.

Quick update: We swapped ecu's and the car still has the same problem. It's now cranking but not firing up at all anymore.

I will try this, thank you! They are new RDX 410cc injectors.

If they're new then you won't have to worry about that. You made sure to change the setting in kpro to 410 for the injectors correct?

Yeah it's set to 410. This is getting pretty frustrating... I'm not sure what's causing it not to start :/

Thanks everyone for all the help. Today my friend took the car to a local shop and they got it running. Apparently two of the coil packs were just switched around -.- lol
