To build or buy a JDM K20 (1979 Mini Cooper Swap)
hey guys im new here, looking for some honda info to to start things off, i should say im building a 1979 Mini Cooper and going to drop in a K20 motor. now im just looking for opinions on whether i just buy a JDM K20A + S80 Trans and be done with it, or if i should build a K20 and find a used trans. do built honda motors last 100,000+KM? (assuming they are built properly of course). i come from subaru land where buying a JDM EJ207 is 1000000x more reliable than building a forged motor so im curious as to how things are in honda land.
must stay N/A
no K24 hybrids
aiming for 200-210(ish) wheel horse power but reliability & longevity is my main goal
will be runnning a standalone ECU (haltech)
so keeping that in mind, what would be the best way to go? i have moderately priced things out and both options are within the same ball park (give or take $500). the JDM motor has upgraded conrods and internal goodies, aswell as ported heads, but i figure if im building a motor i will have all those anyways. i dont be needing power steering or A/C so those will be taken off the JDM motor, but will be a savings on the built motor since i do not need to purchase them.
cheers!,

First question, S80 transmission? Why not use a K20 6 speed transmission such as the Y2M3? It also comes with factory LSD. It really is not worth the hassle of making an adapter plate to fit a B-series transmission to a K20 engine. As for the K20A, if you are aiming for 210 ish hp, you don't need to have it built. It will do that with just a tune. K20 engines, matter of fact Honda engines in general, are known to handle abuse so rest assured reliability and longevity is not a big concern. Just remember to keep up with maintenance.

right, i had my info mixed up. i thought the S80 was the DC5 Type-R trans but its the DC2 Type-R trans. yes i will be using Y2M3 LSD 6 Speed that comes witht he JDM K20A motor.
to clarify, i would not be building the JDM motor. if i bought JDM motor and trans i would leave it as is. the "build" part would be finding a used block, getting it machined, and then assemble it with forged internals. and im pretty moticulous with maintenance so dont worry about that department,
ty for your input, it is appreciated and would like to hear from others.
