I know Innovative makes the mounts, but I've heard they are far from "bolt-in".

With the battery and power electronics taken out, the chassis should be sub 2000 lb with the K swap.

I would rather have one with a D16Z6 or y8.
That is my long term goal, I just need to find an insight with a bad drivetrain.

I would guess that an L15 (Fit engine) would be a lot easier to swap and should fit the bill pretty well.

Except the pesky DBW junk.

How hard would it be to use OBD1 electronics and engine in there?

I helped a local company here that used the Innovative Mounts. The had to be modified so the car could keep AC and ABS. The engine was to far to the right and caused problems with the ABS unit and AC lines. If you have a race car that wouldn't be a problem.

More like about 2000lbs. The battery and associated electronics weigh less than 100 lbs.

I'm not sure, it's such a small market. I will redesign the mounts in my Insight this summer when I change motors. I'll take another look at it and decide then.

it's a small market, but it may become semi-big. im talking to ground control to convince them to make coilovers. Proparts already makes custom front and rear konis for the car.

Well that depends on the definition of (semi-) big. The 1st Gen Insight has sold a total of about 14,000 vehicles for all years while the Civic has been 200,000 to 340,000 per year since 1985. Even though the Accord has outsold the Civic there are far few people doing performance upgrades to those cars because of the people who buy them. The Insight buyer isn't typically a performance person.

That's not so say that if I don't come up with a really cool mount system I won't make it available. I'd like nothing more than an Insight for daily driving with K-series, AC, ABS and a working dash. I think I know how to make the rear suspension work on that car so I would handle as well as be quick.

that is understandable (small number of insights produced). but, look at the quote below. This is what's going to be happening relatively soon due to the batteries and the transmissions (2nd gear) breaking. It will be expensive to fix these two problems with limited parts available. this will make it more feasible for tuners to purchase to do a swap in. heck the insights are going for less than rusted crx's now!

also the rear suspension is cake. shocks are already made by koni, springs are made by a company in KS (hopefully gc will come on board) and a racer was able to put a mk4 jetta rear sway bar in the rear beam to really give the insight that more neutral to oversteer aspect it needs. the front brakes are able to be upgraded as well with a willwood kit and integra calipers and rotors as well.

the market should be good, once people are easily able to swap in k20s.
