where'd my VTEC go? WTF
here's the problem..... (b18c1 obd1 in a 93' honda delsol)
.....my fuel cut off is where it should be and everything (8200 rpm's) but it is a consistent power from 0 to 8200 rpms...... at 4400 rpms i can hear a slight change in the exhaust sound (it gets more high pictched) but absolutely no extra power gain. I actually start to lose power from 5 grand to 8 grand.
*this is what the car USED to do ......... same exact thing as explained above (high pictched change in exahust at 4400 rpm), but before it used to start pulling a little at 5400 rpm's. (and it wouldn't always do it, seemed like it was only engaging 50% of the time)
......now i got nothing (anyway i could check to see if VTEC is engaging)?
FYI....
1.no check engine light
2.the delsol was a SOHC vtec....so i do have the wiring
3.I replace the whole distributer with a new about 2 months ago... so the distributer's newer
....I'm dying for any suggestions/info/help!!

Re: where'd my VTEC go? WTF (93civic_b18b1)
the engine should NOT change its exhaust sound with no VTEC. it should contine to increase to 8200rpm without a pronounced roar (unless you goat a 3.5in exhaust - which you wouldnt).
anyways, if you are losing power from 5 - 8 grand then maybe you have broken something...

(running 2 1/5 inch and hiflo cat.)
....then why the change in sound at 4400rpm's and not up near 5500rpm's where it should be?

if you here a lil pop at 4400 chances are its your vtec, thats the crossover point on a b18c1
as for the loss of power from 5 to 8 grand, dunno check the timing and fuel pressure

oh right - : o - **** its a GSR...
sorry man, i got the flu at the mo...
yeah 4 and a half is your secondaries on the intake and 5 and a half is your VTEC.
so you aint got VTEC. you aint got codes.
maybe you aint got enuf oil pressure, there has been an excellent VTEC thread recently here KAMin was the guy with the problem...
turns out OIL PRESSURE is important for VTEC to work...

Re: where'd my VTEC go? WTF (93civic_b18b1)
why dont you detach the vacuum line to the secondary solinoid and see when the noises happen on a GSR engine?
i belive the secondary intake runners (which normally open above 4400?) stay open with vacuum line detached.

Re: where'd my VTEC go? WTF (tinkerbell)
hmmm, looks like this could go the other way.
i hate being wrong (so i did some checking to make sure i wasnt..)
but i think i am...
just found a thread on the secondairies/VTEC points which seems to indicate that the VTEC is actually at 4400 and secondaries are at 5600. http://honda-acura.net/forums/showth...ht=secondaries
this is with P72 ECU.
sorry for the mis-information.

Re: where'd my VTEC go? WTF (hybrider93)
but i don't got the secondary runners in my intake manifold....the person i bought the swap off of removed that plate!!!!
is that gonna make a difference??? second thing, i still need more replies on this vtec crossover on b18c1...i could swear its 5500....
how come i that "pop" then at 4400 if i don't have a set of secondary runners to open???i'm still confused...and why the lack of power to 8 grand

Re: where'd my VTEC go? WTF (93civic_b18b1)
your lack of power can be a handfull of things.....
if you dont have your IAB system setup (2ndary system) then chances are you losing some major trq down low.......other problems, timing, fuel related etc
parts needed to hook up the 2ndary system (IAB check valve-solenoid-vacumm tank)
and for the LAST time, vtec crossover is at 4.400RPMS

Re: where'd my VTEC go? WTF (93civic_b18b1)
ok heres some info for you. i did a little searching.
VTEC: 4400rpms.
secondary butterflies on the intake manifold: 5700.
you said they were disabled thats why nothing happens at 5700.
the reason your getting a lack of power is because the engine isnt getting enough air. whoever disabled the runners isnt very smart.

Re: where'd my VTEC go? WTF (KAMiN)
wonderfull...keep the info coming
...i guess i got my vtec crossover points mixed up on the b18c1 and the b16a motors
as for the secondary butterflies.....he actually took the 3/4 inch plate out thats in the intake manifold and has the 4 butterflies on it. he claimed it "gained 10-15 horses....but lost torque on high end" ( I already paid the guy the 3 grand...so i told him to give me my damn motor)

Re: where'd my VTEC go? WTF (93civic_b18b1)
so let me make this clear..... if i'm hearing the high pitched "pop" type noise in my exhaust at 4400 which i am, then my vtec is engaging......as for power up near 5700 rpms, i'm losing torque because of the loss of the secondary butterflies???
does this make sense?

Re: where'd my VTEC go? WTF (93civic_b18b1)
yeah, i think you got it worked out,
not sure that you would be loosing anything up top though, with the butterflys removed - only down low would you feel it...
if it feels like you are not gaining power past 5.5k then you may need a tune up or there is something else not right...

Re: where'd my VTEC go? WTF (93civic_b18b1)
well most common is for the swap not to come with the 2ndarys in tact, at least here in so cal
anyhoos get the 2ndarys hookedup, check the timing and you should be fine....
good luck!

Re: where'd my VTEC go? WTF (93civic_b18b1)
okay.. okay.. 4400 and 5500.. thats final.. i see it everyday in the gsr.. anyways.. try to see if your car is running lean.. the gsr just got a pp pm job and it's running lean now, and 4400 kicks but the 5500 doesn't anymore so see if that is happening.. it shouldn't really affect it but take a look.. the lude still kicks with it running lean.. hmm.. nm.. when you figure it out, post something up so i can see what it is aights.. thanks..
