when does vtec kick in on everyones gsr??
I have a 99 gsr motor in my 92 hatch. I can hear soemthing at 4500 rpms. (like exhasut gets a little louder) but isn't that early as hell for vtec?when does the secondarys open? I don't get a CEL, so it must be ok, but it still seems like its missing vtec.
please a little help. thanx.

4400...you can win bets on that one. I've had a ton of people not believe me. I should start making $$ off them...or lunch or something. hehe.

Take your car out and floor it.. you should be able to tell when vtec hits.. and yes its 4400.. dont let anyone tell you otherwise!

yep
my buddy was like
"no its 5800! for vtec, 4400 for secondaries"
i was like "ill prove it, watch"
revved my other friends gsr to 6000, at 5800 the secondary butterfly opened
"**** you man!" - my buddy who owed me lunch.

most people don't believe that the B18C1 has a 4400 VTEC switchover point.
but it's true and you can really hear it if you've installed an intake or exhaust, or run on open header. it's very distinct and much lower than the B16A or B18C5.

Re: when does vtec kick in on everyones gsr?? (92hatchy)
GSR motors have a dual stage intake mani, at 4400 or so, vtec starts, but due to the low rpm (that vtec hates) Only the primary runner (long runner) is open, and the fuel map follows that assumption, creating decent low end tq. at 5800 or so, the primaries stay open, then the secondary (butterfly valve) opens on the intake manifold, allowing a freer flowing, more direct path of air to flow, aiding in the vtec function and using a more efficient fuel map.
Some people erroneously call that 2nd stage vtec It prolly the lowest vtec engagement point on hondas, but it makes for good streetability.

As posted earlier...4400 vtec, 5800 secondaries. The vtec, IMO, is more audible while the secondaries are felt more. 1st gear revs to redline pretty fast...so it's not always easy to distinguish the engagement. I just do a 2nd or 3rd gear pull to hear the switch.

yeah, there are so many people out there who think it comes at at 5800, 6000, 8000, whatever. 4400 for VTEC, and technically (check your Helm's manual before you argue with me) 5750 for the IAB.
