Default When buying a motor how can you tell if it is good/

So I was planing to buy a soch-v out of a 94 ex.

Just don't know how to test when it is not int car. Cannot crank it to do a copmresion test. And I am not able to do a leak down test either.

Any other sugestions to verify it is a good engine?

I will do a search on leak down test cause I'm not sure If I have the tools to do one. I was uner the impresion that I would need compressed air. So im not sure if I would be able to do a leakdown test at the persons house that is selling motor.

But you have a good point I should insist on doing a leakdown test, other wise I would be taking a chace. I was hopeing there were some other easy was to check out the motor.

If you can't do a leakdown or compression test only thing I can think of would be to pull the motor apart and check everything.

12V battery, jumper cables and compression tester will enable you to roughly test compression from cyl to cyl. just make sure if it has a tranny attached, it's in neutral and also that the TB is open.

it's not hard ; )

other basic checks- take the timing belt cover off and peep around, take valve cover off and look around, check plugs, peep coolant passages with light, check oil consistency...

I've done that before and it saved me the trouble of getting a bad motor.
