what is NOT included when you buy an engine?
Planning a b16a swap into Civic Hatch. Sites say the engine includes
Engine + 5 Speed Trans. (Cable) + ECU. Or something similar to that.
Now what else do i need to have a running car? I notice it doesn't
include stuff like a radiator, belts, other electronics. What is needed
in addition to the engine?
-ideas? thx

axles,motor mounts,
sometimes these are included but in case they arn't... starter, exhaust manifold, alternator, sometimes they have broken sensors (mine had a smashed knock sensor),belts are cheap and easy with the engine out. i recomend that you replace the timing belt and water pump.it varies from engine to engine my buddy ordered the same engine from the same place and his came with exaust manifold a, starter and not a broken knock sensor.Just ask the place that you're buying the engine from what is all included w/the engine.they will tell you the normal engine/tranny/ecu but ask them what is on the engine that they are going to ship you.

As for replacing the timing belt and water pump...well good idea but my suggestion is rebuild it before it goes in the car. I know it's hard to buy a swap and then spend another $400-600 rebuilding it but one it's easier to do it out of the car and two you don't have to worry about blowing smoke or worse yet a motor...a $600 rebuild is easier than buying a new motor.
I suggest doing it all rings, bearings(rod only main bearings rarely go out), head gasket, rear main seal, water pump, thermostat, timing belt.

Is it possible to buy a engine (B16, B18, etc.) with all the required components in order for it to run. also have headwork done to the engine if specified. im just curious cause i plan on purchasing a engine sometime in the future but dont want to have to deal with replacing broken components on the engine. i live in fayetteville, arkansas. there are not many mechanics around this neighborhood that i would trust to do any kind of work on my car. i would appreciate any kind of info. p/o

Re: what is NOT included when you buy an engine? (mayfield)
well now i'm thinking of changing my plans a little.
i have a fully functional b18b (ls) motor. i'm thinking
this mightbe the best bet for a high boost turbo setup
that i'd like later. it has low compression and i have
all the neceesary components. just need to slap it
in a frame.
but then i got no vtec
i'd really like to have that huge boost pushing through
the vtec cam profile.
so here's what i'm thinking.. b16a, ecu, tranny and
if any parts are not included just use the stuff from my
b18b. - possible?
also.. i'm still considering lsvtec, but because engine
life is important its at the bottom of my wish list.

To the guy that asked... it's completely possible to buy a fully running motor. I did, and got a one-week running warranty also (if it screwed up in that week, the shop would make good on the probems).
All you really *need*, if you get a complete engine, is the additional electronics to wire up the new engine (wires, harnesses, whatever), the new axles, and someone to modify your shift linkage or cable hookups so that it'll work right. It's just good sense to replace as much as you can while it's out of the car since it's so much easier when removed.
