Default VX civic head on D15B, can this be done?

Hey can a D15Z1 (92-95 Civic VX) head be put on a D15B (90-91 Civic CX/DX) bottom. Now I know your thinking "Why waste your time with that motor, just get a 1.6." but that's not whats at hand, I just want to know if it will work. Also will I need to run the VTEC off a external device (such as a Fields controller) or can I just use a ECU from like a 92 Si? Please reply or email me: Decorves@aol.com. Thanks guys (and gals).

Yes you can use the VX head on the D15B block to build a mini-me VTEC. It's the same as using a Y8 or Z6 head. There isn't anything else special about installing it. Just be aware that the VX head is a VTEC-E, the ports and less aggressive cam hurt performance compared to a Z6/Y8. You can use a 92 Si (P28) ECU or you could opt for a VTEC controller or even a RPM switch. The ECU is of course the best choice but it all depends on your budget.

The D15B head is better for performance than the Z1 - unless you are going for gas mileage, I'd stay with what you have. The early D15 heads were all of similar castings, the best performance bet would be to get the A6 cam to go with the D15B head.

Another thing to keep in mind when putting the Z1 head on another 1.5 is the compression ratio - the Z1 combustion chamber is small which was coupled with deeply dished pistons in the Z1 to give it 9.3:1 compression ratio. So you would end up with a higher compression ratio (good) but with tiny intake and exhaust ports (not good). And, the VTEC-E operation changes from what is basically 12 valve operation to 16 valve operation - make sure you look at this (rpm point of activation is 2500). The actual operation of the VTEC-E is to get you back to 16 valve operation, which is what you already have.

Again, get an A6 cam (and adjustable cam gear for the difference between the 1.5 and 1.6 cam timing) and your car will thank you!

My $.02

i am curious as to why you would want the vtec-e head to begin with? i have a 95 vx, and sure it has suprised me with some of the races i win, but its nothing special.
