VTEC ISN'T ENGAGING!!!!HELPPPP

hey whats up guys i bought a 99 jdm gsr swap to put into my eg hatch, i put it in and vtec isnt engaging at all, the check engine light is on, i checked the code and it said code 6, which is the coolant temperature sensor, all the vtec wiring is good, but do u think the check engine light has sumthin to do with it? i was told my car doesnt even need that sensor because its obd1
could it be that im using a obd1 usdm gsr ecu? should i use the jdm ecu which is obd2?

there are 2 wires coming out of the harness near the vtec solenoid, which run along with the vtec wiring , these 2 wires are black and red, n those r supposed to be the coolant sensor temperature wires..................man sum1 help!!!!!!!! https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emsad.gif

CEl can definately cause VTEC to not work!

the coolant temp sensor is a part of vtec, the ECU wont engage vtec till the engine is at a normal operating temprature. so if the ECU dosent know what temprature the engine is, no vtec.

fix that problem, you fix vtec.

thanx alot man, but can u tell me where the coolant sensor goes connected into?
i have 2 wires that are spliced out near the vtec harness, they are red and green, i was told these are the coolant sensor wires
also, should i be using the jdm ecu which is obd2 or can i still use the usdm obd1 wcu
the motor is a jdm 99 gsr
thanx man

if i remember correctly the wires go some where under the dizzy and vtec. the sensores look like pins

how do you get the codes on the ecu when the check engine light is on?

Under the distributor there are 2 sensors. One is the fan switch which is threaded into the motor and has 2 wires coming out of it. The other is a smaller sensor that has one wire coming out of it, this is the coolant temp sensor. This wire needs to be run to your ecu.
