most people go with the b16 head since it has the best flow for the price (remember the type-r heads are based off the b16), the b17 crank is for FI applications. due to the larger bore of the b20 the sleeves aren't as thick as other b series motors, so you destroke it to relieve cylinder wall stress

well u should just go back to.. b20.net.. and crvtec.com...and read what these b20 techs have to say..
overall the b16b is the best overall stock honda head..
and the reason for the destroking of the b20 motor..with a b17 crank
is to bring the rod ratio to a more friendly 1.7 or so level which makes the engine live easier so to say.. but to most destroking a b20 just doesn't seem worth it I mean u get the engine for the torque basically..sorry I would wish to explain myself more but it's late *yawn*

What we normally did was use B16A head and use B20B block
Port polish and balance the B16A head

How the hell do you balance a head eh.

Use the B16A head it is the easiest to find it is cheaper and it use's a more detonation friendly combustion chamber. You can also bolt a factory Type-R manifold to it. The B16a head is gonna be the best bet if yah ask me.

Dualstage, which cylinder head did you bolt to B20B, is it GSR or Type R? How about ecu, require programming? Thanks.

ok lemme lay some shiz to ya
1.) B20B/Z doen't really matter k. get a decent header on the B20B with an LS intake mainfold and you get about 20~25 more ponies. the intake and exhuast are WAY restrictive stock on a CRV. If you're going CRVtec, you might want to stick with the B20B 'cuase it has .5 or so lower compression than the B20Z. Slapping a B16 head on there is going raise your CR. An as gas is going right now, I wouldn't be wanting to have to run premium w/ an octane booster to keep detonation away.

2.) You'll only have to wire in the knock sensor in the ECU is looking for it. Best bet for a B20 no vtec, get a 90-91 LS ECU. For VTEC appliactions, a i'm not sure, maybe a 1st gen B16 ECU(pr3 or pw0?), but i don't think those would have to best fuel maps for a 2L engine.

If you're dead set on a CRVETC-
~ B20B block The knock sensor is good b/c ALL B series vtecs have one. So any ECU you get to match will be looking for one.
~ B16 head From an 88-91 JDM SIR obviously, this will be the easiest to accomidate to a CRXs wiring. You'll want to use the dizzy/injectors that come with this motor.
~ Wiring IF your CRX is HF or SI use the harness on your original engine, and add in the appropriate wiring.
~ Tranny Any JDM cable would be nice (J1/S1(JDM)/Y1), constant higher RPMs, but nice performance factor. If you're looking for more of a subdued tranny. Try the USDM 90-93 integra LS tranny (S1/YS1). I had one one my DX hybrid, they're not bad trannies. Actually the USDM S1/YS1 gearing is approximately the same as a CRX Si's gearing. Just food for thought.

Hope I helped alittle

I thought the stock knock sensor was pretty much ineffective, and all it does is detect knock when some fool puts 87 in a car that needs 92...or if you get a bad batch.

Damn, I think the B17 had no knock sensor....if so...b17 and ecu might be the ticket to ride...

WTF is everyone talking about? Where do you guys get your information?!

Ok..lets set some things straight..

The B20Z has a knock sensor...not the B20B.

The B20Z has higher compression..which is good! Why would you pick the block with lower compression? Look at the VTEC motors..they are all like 10.0:1 or higher compression. The higher compression will give you more power.

B20s have thinner cylinder walls? Who told you that? Ever looked at a B20 block? You are correct in saying the B17 crank is to releave side load on the cylinders but is only needed for FI applications.

Now...if youre gonna go VTEC...do yourself a favor and get some aftermarket pistons and rods. The B20 rods are not made to rev to 8000 rpms..they will break..and you will have a hole in your block.

HX guy is right. Other info is wrong. The sleeve is slightly thicker on the B20's over the Ls motor.

Also the B20B does not have a knock sensor. But it does have the threaded hole for it. So just get a knock sensor and an ecu that supports it.

Dont bother with the 1.7 crank, you got the motor for displacement, not high revs. If you want high revs, get the B16A.
