ok i found loads of info and hasport has a full how to guide on the site but it says to use a lift and lower the car over the engine , now my question is as im unlikely to have access to a lift does the engine fit from the top or does it have to go in from underneath???

Use a engine hoist and attatch it to your car. You should be able to lift the front end high enough with one of those

just put it in from the top.

i was also thinking about doing everything i can at my place and then having a word with a mate to see if i can take it to his garage just to actuall fit the engine to the mounts then back to mine for the rest of work

yes, w/ a lil shove and pushin', you'll need at least more person to do this while the other works the engine hoist.
gl. and keep your fingers off the back of the intake manifold while lowering it. . .
