Default usdm OBD IIb SI swap into a 98 OBDIIa shell need help

car is runnin like crap, the compression is 160-155-145-140. i figure that this is a headgasket leak but would that make the motor want to die out its not leaking out but the leak is in the block we are guessing. we are getting codes for vtec 21 and 22. the motor is using a OBDII-OBDI wiring harness conversion and a chipped p28, the garage that originally wired and swapped the car used the complete SI OBD IIB harness and the car's ecu shorted out. that is the reason why we also converted to OBDI. we swapped the OBDIIb harness out again and reused the OBDIIa harness. what else could be the cause of the car dying after we start it???
help would be very appreciated

thanks
